Mapping drives: Vista to Vista
Hi,I have two Vista boxes. One, my main PC (fileserver), acts like my file-server the other which is my laptop connects to my documents, music, videos etc and syncs daily with the main PC. Now both my main pc and laptop use the same username and password so under my account this works fine. However under my wife's account on the laptop I also want to map one of the folders on the fileserver but she does not have an account on this server. Under XP I could just map them without issue (though this wasnt very secure). Apart from adding my wifes account to my fileserver is there any other way to allow her to connect to one of the shares? I noticed I can pick locations under file sharing but it only ever sees the fileserver never the laptop as a location. Thanks in advance.

Hello, Windows Vista uses Password Protected Sharing by default which requires a username and password created on both computers for network access. So the computer will not be able to access your shared folders without a username and password that corresponds to a user account with the shared folder. If you haven't already, please review this TechNet article on file and printer sharing. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

Thanks. So basically it works like a corporate system minus the domain controller. Thats fine since thats more secure. Thanks for the answer.

New issue. On my fileserver I have a second drive I use to backup my main PC as well as my laptop. I have shared the drive and given full control to the local account called X which is the same account name on the laptop (and same password). However when I try and use the drive as the backup location I get this error:"The network share could not be accessed for the following reasons:You need Full Control permission for the network share. Make the user a co-owner of the share, with Full Control. The network share cannot be on a computer running XP home. (0x8100002A)Please ensure the network location is valid"Now when I go to properties on the drive I have added user X as a full control user but there is no option for "co-owner" in the hard-drive share dialog (I know there is in the folder equivalent). Any ideas? Thanks.

The username and password you use must have a target share set Full Control, also known as Co-owner" of the share that you use for the backup. Both file system permissions and share permissions must bet set. They must be set "Full Control" for the user name you specify in the backup. To view or set the file system permissions, right-click the drive, and then click the Security tab.
