Manually set System Restore Point
I have an HP Laptop with W7(64bit) SP1 and I suspect I corrupted my Windows Media file when I tried to install a Firefox file to play the radio in Google Chrome. Anyway, WMP does not work, nor does the desktop files Screen Resolution and Personalize (the error comes up "No such Interface Supported". I would like to restore to a previous date (before Jan 25) but all that comes up are dates 2/1/2012 and 2/5/2012. I have tried running sfc/scannow to no avail, i have tried vssadming shadowstorae and increased the memory size to 20% and that also didn't work. How can i get earlier restore dates?

Hello, Use Start >> type in "restore your computer to an earlier time" >> click "Open System restore" then click on "choose a different restore point". Checkmark the line "Show more restore points". That may just show more restore points for you. Maurice Naggar ~ MS-MVP (Oct 2002 - Sept 2010) DTS-L

Unfortunately, I tried that but all that is listed is 2/1 and 2/5. I can't figure out why I can't restore to an earlier time because the problem happened on the first of February.

This is hard to determine from here. Keep well in mind that restoration points also take up diskspace and that by default only a fraction of your HD is used for such data. And once the assigned amount of 'restore space' (to give it a name) has been used up then older restore points will be removed in order to make place for new ones. Now, I'm well aware that this doesn't help you out right now, but although this is an assumption on my part this is what has happened. Easiest way to configure (or check) this: Control panel -> System & Security -> System -> System security (or something similiar). At the bottom you'll see for which drives snapshots have been enabled and by clicking "configure" you can change the amount of space which has been reserved for them. Hope this helps too. With kind regards, Peter

Thank you Peter. I have tried to increase my allocated space but I think that this is too late. So I am left with a system recovery to original configuration which I will do on Wednesday since I will be out of town until then. In the interim if you have any further suggestions, let me know...... Carl

If the remained space for restore points is not enough, old restore points will be deleted. Well as fate would have it I had to recover my original configuration and start all over. It simply was a matter of a corrup file that prevented me from doing what I wanted. Now it works great....Thanks to all who answered. Carl
