Malware infection and McAfee
My wife's computer was recently infected with the "My Personal Security" infection where a program installs and fake alerts pop up saying that she has an infection. I managed to get the thing to quit running by disabling a few registry entries. However, Mcafee was disabled and I can't figure out how to get it back. In the process of installing the Malware, the exe commands seem to have been disabled becaise I cannot reinstall the exe files to reinstall the software. Also, I cannot start any of the McAfee programs by clicking them. Further, the system is on a high speed cable connection but downloads run at the speed of dial-up. Other PCs on the LAN run as expected. Once a downloaded program (such as Malware removal software) finishes downloading, it will not execute. Additionally, the task manager will not execute either with the ctrl-alt-del keys or by clicking on the taskbar. Finally, the McAfee services are set to automatically start but going to the services tool, I can't get them to start manually wither. I get an error 1053. I did a web search for ideas on how to get this infection resolved but all the sites recommend one or another program to get rid of the malware. Since I can't get any of those programs to install, that option is out of the question. Can anyone give me a list of registry entries to remove (and other information) so that I can manually fix this problem?1 person needs an answerI do too

Your computer is still infected. Removing a few registry entries will not remove the malware. You can try running Doug Knox's .exe fix (which is not an .exe file so you can run it) and then go through the malware removal. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm Your system is infected with a rogue security program. It is called "rogue" because it pretends to be A Good Guy but is really Evil. Do not pay them! Bleeping Computer has removal steps for many variants of rogues here - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-vista-2010 You can also check for removal steps at these links: Bleeping Computer removal how-to's - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html Malwarebytes malware removal guides - http://tinyurl.com/5xrpft Malwarebytes' Anti-malware (MBAM) or SuperAntiSpyware will often do the job. Both have free versions and you do not need to purchase these programs. These may work for you and all may be well. However, in many cases the computer will also be infected with other trojans and protected by a rootkit. These machines are extremely difficult to clean. If your machine is one of these cases, either get guided help at one of the specialty forums listed at the link below OR take your machine to a local computer professional OR back up your data and do a clean install of Windows. It is your choice. I don't recommend using BigComputerStore/GeekSquad types of places. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#HJT-linksMS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
