Malicious Software Removal Tool won't launch
Trying to run Malicious Software Removal Tool on my laptop because I have a virus - I can download the self-extracting file to my desktop, but when I double-click it the MRT.EXE does not start. Tried several times. When I search for it I found several files named "MRT.EX-4gfrbju8" (or similar random characters) in a folder called C:/WINDOWS/PREFETCH. I assume the virus somehow corrupted MRT.EXE before it could launch. I also tried this on my desktop and the MSRT app ran OK. But is there another way to get it to launch?1 person got this answerI do too

Sorry - meant to ask another question too. WHen I tried to A+C+D to Task Manager, it said "Disabled by Administrator". Has my user cinfig been corrupted too? I saw another thread on how to fix that - but will your previous answer resolve that as well? Thanks...

Was able to use the REVO tool to do a system restore (MSRT was not under the "Windows Tools" menu), which then allowed me to run the MSRT off of a CD I had copied it to from another machine. It still didn't find any infected files, and neither did a McAfee full scan. So the laptop seems OK right now, but not confident thiswon't happen again...

Hi there eddie, first of all,the M/soft Malicious Software Removal Tool,is accessible from within your computer. For future reference, please go to Start on your desktop, click Run, type mrt.exe, click ok.That's it.The MSRT will appear.By the way doing a system restore does Not get rid of malware, but since you don't mention the name of the virus or malware you possibly have,i would suggest you first go to http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/ That's a very good virus scanner. When you are on the site, make sure to disable your 'real time'Antivirus installed on your pc,before you run the scan.(and remember to turn it back on afterwards)The scanner will delete any nasties it finds after the scan is done,if you so instruct it(after the scan is done it will display a list of what was found,)Then run the MSRT(Full scan)as described above, that too will remove anything it finds, but without asking you.The next step would be to DELETE ALL SYSTEM RESTOREPONTS on your pc,as they are all likely to be corrupted now.Reboot your pc,then turn System Restore back on.Reboot again.f you'll let me know what security applications you have on your pc,i can then suggest very good FREE programs, that can hopefully help you avoid similar problems in the future.Good luck.
