Making External Hard Drive Viewable On Network
Hi.Here at my office, we have a server that holds jobs folders. Whenever a job is completed and becomes unnecessary, we remove it from the server and put it onto an external hard drive. Doing this allows us to keep completed jobs in case they need to be referenced later, while still freeing up space on the server. As of now, I am the one in possession of the external hard drive. Unfortunately, it's somewhat inconvenient for the other people here at the office to have to constantly come to me for old job information. So this brings me to my question. Is there a way to make it so everyone on the network can access the information on the external hard drive? I'm fairly sure this is possible. I'm running Windows XP. I have the external plugged in and Simple File Sharing enabled. I've already tried just looking at the drive's properties and setting it so it is shared with other people on the network. I was still unable to access the drive over the network. Do I need some kind of special hardware? I'm clueless. Can anyone help me?Thanks in advance,Corey (a.k.a. Elastic Panda)1 person got this answerI do too

Since you are not using a true server but workgroups (serving on workstation) each machine that tries to access the files need to have the same account on it that you are using on the "serving computer." BTW, XP Pro only allows 10 "connections" to it and that is not computers but "services" connecting to it. Have you tried to connect the external drive to the server and share it from there using the server's domain if the server is running a true domain network?

I just figured that if I could set it up on an XP computer, I would be more likely to get help using XP than Windows Server 2000. EDIT: Nvm. After taking another look at it, the problem has been resolved. Thank you for the help LVTravel :)
