Make destination security permissions apply to files moved within same volume by default (Win 8.1)
 Hello,

Basically I'm trying to achieve what is described in kb article 2617058 ""MoveSecurityAttributes" registry entry does not work in Windows 7, in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008  or in Windows Server 2008 R2", but rather for Windows 8.1:

The registry entry referred to in that piece isn't showing up on my machine.

Would appreciate feedback on how to achieve the desired default behaviour on Windows 8.1 any time a move operation takes place.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Andy,

Please explain a bit about the requirement.

Based on my test, the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MoveSecurityAttributes doesnt exist in Windows 8.1.

In the KB 2617058 article, it is not applicable for Windows 8.1

Hi Fangzhou,

Thanks for your reply.

My understanding of the default Windows design, based on many online articles and from what I am experiencing, is that security attributes (permissions) of a file or folder when moved on the same volume, will not automatically be replaced and inherit those of the new location.

The requirement is for Windows to replace the security attributes of the file or folder to inherit those of the destination location in this scenario.

The KB article referenced shows how to achieve this for Windows versions prior to 8, however I have found no solution to achieve this on Windows 8 (8.1).

Hope I have explained this satisfactorily, but please let me know if not.

Thanks.
Kind Regards,
Andy Porter
