Major DHCP/Networking Issues
This Windows 7 PC will not get an IP address from the Linksys Router; just hangs at "Identifying." A Static IP address gets me Internet, but no access to the File Server. Can't RUN \\SERVER, but I can ping its IP address. Tried replacing the NIC, no help. IPCONFIG/ALL results are pasted below; any advice greatly appreciated. Thx in Advance! When you configure a Static IP, try setting the Primary DNS server IP to the same as your rotuer (192.168.1.1) - this should resolve the problem of not being able to access \\SERVER.With regards to the router, a search on Google has revealed that many people with Linksys routers are experiencing problems, ranging from your problem, to the whole network going off when a new Windows 7 PC is connected! You could try disabling IPv6 on the network adapter - although that's just a suggestion - it might make no difference. Also have you tried updating the firmware on the Linksys?Failing that, you may just need to bite the bullet and get a different router.

Thanks for the suggestions. The router is a Linksys is a WRT54G, latest firmware, but not the latest model. I had not tried changing the Windows 7 PC's DNS Server in the Static IP to the Router; I had it set DNS to the WAN IP's. I had tried disabling IPV6, along with the Link-layer items. Curiously, when the Windows 7 PC was connected to a Switch connected to the Router during intitial setup, it did get the IP Address and pulled down the updates. The Network Map still shows the PC connected to a Switch, then the Gateway, even though it's now connected directly to the Router. It also shows the Vista PC which is connected directly to the Router as being connected through a Switch, but none of the PC's connected through the Switch are visible. The Vista PC has no connectivity problems. Is there a way to "reset" the Network map, so the PC correctly sees itself connected directly to the Router, without the Switch? Resetting the Router and the PC did not accomplish this.thx in advance for the assistance ....

Hi, Here are some suggestions you can try: 1. Modify the Windows 7 DNS address as a static IP to the router. 2. Temporarily turn off firewall on the machine. 3. Uninstall the NIC driver and reinstall it in Compatibility Mode. If issue still occurs, please transfer a large file and perform following steps to capture a log file. Collect the Netmon trace ========================= a. Download NetMon3.3 from the following website and install it on the computer http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f b. Launch NetMon3.3. c. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 window, click Create a new capture tab … d. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. e. Then, switch to Network Monitor, press F5 to start NetMon. f. Try to change the Network location from Home to Public, and then change it back. When it failed, go to next step. g. Go back to the NetMon window and press F7 to stop the NetMon. h. Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file named test. Then please upload to SkyDrive (www.skydrive.live.com ) and share the link to me. Thanks, Novak
