Mail program with brand new laptop

I have a brand new Dell laptop. I have been trying, for two days, to get it set up, but I cannot get beyond some point which requires a code. I enter the code (which, I have found, works only one time, even if you go back), and then I get an error message: "The service is currently unavailable. Please try again later." Well, I've *been* trying for two whole days - without success. I have half a dozen "codes" which no longer work. I don't understand what "service" is unavailable or how to determine if/when it *is* available or why I even need to go through this. I can get onto the Internet; why all this other baloney?

Please - I am a senior citizen woman with little computer knowledge.  All I want is to be able to get my email. Can anyone help with very simple, very step-by-step instructions?  If you can, God bless!  Thanks for reading.

Hi,

According to your description, I doubt whether you're referring to a Microsoft Account. If you're not connected to a Microsoft Account in your Windows 8.1 system, when you click the Mail App, it will inform you to switch to a Microsoft Account. If you don't have a Microsoft Account, then you can refer to thw following two links to create\sign up to the Microsoft Account.
