Machine Name changes based on IP address
Hi, Whenever I try to change the Machine name of a system it reverts back to the old name after reboot. I have since discovered that it is being changed automatically based on what the IP address is. For example if I change my ip address to 192.168.2.23 The new machine name will be xxx-2-23...I am suspecting group policy or registry entry but would like some direction if possible as to where this is occuring! Thanks in ADvance!Francis Crawford Systems Administrator III Ministry of Finance

Hi, I would like to check whether the computer is in domain environment or workgroup? If it has joined domain, you can contact the domain admin to check whether there are some settings about it. Also, you can leave the domain and change the name to test the issue. Hope this helps Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

interesting - I wonder what was the purpose of implementing that. Maybe some login script is at play?David :: Please vote if the info helped you :: Please post back so everyone can benefit from the solution ::

Hey Guys First off tnks for responding. I found the reason it was happenening. Appararently the previous administrators had a Clonezilla server setup before and it has since crashed. But to make this response shorter they had installed something called DRBL-Winroll - A MS-Windows extension tool which can be configured to do stuff like this!Francis Crawford Systems Administrator III Ministry of Finance
