MS downloads
My monthly internet cannot exceed my monthly allowance (I think it's 200 MB). When I download the important MS updates, it takes half my usage allowance. I cannot determine which updates I need or how to download only selected ones. Can anyone help me?

You can change the settings so they don't download automatically, then you can chose what to install. There are two types - Important and Optional - you should install the important ones. If you have enough data left for the month install the Optional ones. Here is a guide how to change your settings: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2797-windows-update-settings-change.html More info: Updating your computer Install Windows updates Understanding Windows automatic updating

Thanks for your reply, TrekDozer. I followed your instructions. I can't afford the MBs to download all of the updates. How do I choose which of the updates to download? There are 28 important updates. The Windows 7 updates would use the following: 6.0MB, 9.7MB, 21.3MB, 14.2MB, 1.8MB, 11.0MB, 22.7MB, 406KB, 546KB, 919KB, 2.0MB, 368KB, 907KB, 27.5MB, 37.5MB, 381KB, 2.2MB, 4.6MB, 208KB, 1.1MB, 65KB, 14.9MB. Security updates for MS Office 2007 would use the following: 1.9MB, 6.1MB, 3.0MB, 7.5MB, 8.5MB, 7.4MB. How do I choose which updates to download? I can't do them all. Thanks.

Generally speaking, ALL the Important ones should be installed but you can usually afford to leave the ones for .NET a little longer. Im surprised that your download allowance is so small what service are you using? Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

I didn't see anything with ".net" associated with my downloads. Guess I'll just download a few important updates every month. I have an aircard connection with AT&T. If I paid $20 more a month, I could download lots more. This is their minimum internet offered. Thanks for your help! I appreciate it. Any version of Windows from Vista upwards has at least one version of .NET installed and updates for these come out most months. Check your Installed Updates or the list of current offerings for details. You could also afford to ignore updates for Office components that you dont use or at least wait until you can borrow someone elses bandwidth! Im surprised at the high cost of your bandwidth here in the UK I can get 1GB for 10, or 3GB for 15 on a PAYG system, using a USB dongle. Good luck.
