MS VPN stopped working as did my Sprint Card Sierra 587 - Vista Ultimate 64 bit
On Sprint card connect attempt I get a PPP 31 error and the message RAS Error, Return Value: 31.Also cannot connect to any VPN using standard MS VPN. Think this may have stopped working after a set up updates were auto downloaded and applied. The Sprint card works in my netbook. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Sprint software and still does not work. Any assistance will be appreciated.Darrell Dugan

Hi Darrell, Thank you for posting. Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Please perform a Clean Boot to check the issue. Clean boot ================= 1) Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2) Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3) Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. NOTE: we can go back to normal boot by running msconfig again and checking on Normal Startup in the General tab. In the Clean Boot Environment, the third party services and applications are disabled, please check if the issue reoccurs at this time. If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit. 2. Reinstall the Sprint card driver in Device Manager: 1) Click Start, right click Computer and choose Properties. 2)Click Device Manager. 3)Navigate to the Sprint card. 4)Right click on it and choose Uninstall. If there is a check box Delete the driver software for the device., please also check it and click OK. 5) Please also go to Control Panel Program and Features to check if there is entry for the device driver. If so, please also remove it. 6)Reboot the computer and reinstall the driver. If there is a new version of the driver released, please install this one. You can also manually install the driver after rebooting: 1) Go to Device Manager and navigate to the device. 2) Right-click on the device and select Update Driver Software. 3) When the window appears, please choose Browse my computer for driver software, locate the destination of the driver file and click Next. The computer will install the driver automatically. 3. Just as a check, please plug the card to another Windows Vista computer and see if you can establish the VPN connection. Meanwhile, you can try to establish the connection via another network device to see if it will work. If everything worked before, a quick solution is to restore the system back to the previous status when the issue didnt occur with System Restore. (Note: Performing a system restore may cause the loss of the current system settings; therefore, before doing this, please make sure that the system restore point is not too old and set a restore point for the current status.) Additionally, I would like to share the following document for your reference: Error message when you establish an outgoing remote access connection in Windows Server 2003: "Error 734 - The PPP link control protocol terminated" or "TCP/IP CP reported error 31: A device attached to the system is not functioning" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951013 Hope this helps. Thanks, first steps did not help, but the system restore did the trick.
