MS Updates on my laptop, appear to be locked out..The update screen shows the red shield like the firewall protection.
My operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate...the computer is a HP Laptop. I cannot get any updates from Microsoft and the laptop is long past due on any updates. It had been previously set to auto update, however sometime around 10/2011 the updates stopped and I cannot get any updates from Microsoft...what is wrong?

Hello MMacafee, If your system is WIN7, you have posted in a Vista area, and should have rather posted in a Windows 7 section. Your message-title suggests that the firewall is not on. Be sure you are looking at Windows 7 Action Center (Control Panel >>Action Center) and expand the Security section detail (click on down arrow by Security) and check what it shows for firewall status. A missing firewall and non-operational Windows Updates (or Automatic Updates) {yours apparently out for 5 or 6 months} raise serious issues on the security status of this system. Is your antvirus program all up-to-date? Have you scanned your system with it? Which A-V is installed? Do you have anti-malware apps installed? Which? and have you scanned your system with it? If you go to Control Panel >> Windows Update and click on View Update History, what is the most recent entry and does it show an update failure with an exception code? See "How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issues" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602 and click on the link just under Method 1 in that article. Reply back with current status & details. Maurice Naggar ~ MS-MVP (Oct 2002 - Sept 2010) DTS-L
