MSIE 8, Windows Update, and even VS 2008 online Help almost not usable on Windows 7 64-bit
I have recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on a clean new system. Everything works fine but nothing which uses connections to the Internet. Except FireFox which is running without any problems. When I open i.e. a page from microsoft.com (or any other) it takes up to 10 minutes(!) until the page appears. FF takes not even a second. Windows Update takes days and nights (over a 2Mb leased line) for a couple updates but all was done recently without any changes in behavior. Therefore even the Online Activation ends up in a timeout error which is also very annoying. VS 2008 online help etc. takes also up to 10 minutes to display anything. The caption of the IE form shows a "(Not Responding)" message and in the status bar a "Waiting for http://website..." I did a reset in IE. Disabled all add-ons as well as I also removed all unnecessary (overlong) user agent strings as described on my other resource pages but nothing helps. Any other network related tools or Office 2007 programs are working perfectly. Any help or tips are really appreciated

Hi,As both Windows update and VS 2008 involve IE, so let us focus on IE. First, I would like to confirm If IE and Firefox are using the same proxy or one of them did not use proxy. The accessing\download speed depends on different Proxy. If proxy is not the issue, you can change to Another DNS Address and rename the host file to troubleshoot:Change to Another DNS Address===============================1. Click "Start", and click "Control Panel". 2. Open "Network Connection". 3. Right click on "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties".4. Highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click "Properties". 5. A popup window titled "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP Properties)" will open. Please select "Use the following DNS server address." 6. Set the IP Address for "Preferred DNS Server" to 4.2.2.2 and "Alternate DNS Server" to 4.2.2.3Rename Hosts file============1. Click "Start", "Run", type "%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc" (without the quotations) and then press "Enter". 2. Right-click on the file "Hosts" (without quotations) and choose "Rename".3. Rename the file to "hostsold" (without quotations).4. Then, clear the "DNS" (Domain Name Resolution) cache:1). Click "Start", "Run", type "cmd" (without quotations) and press "Enter". 2). In the open window, type: "ipconfig /flushdns" (without quotations) and press "Enter".Note: The Hosts file will be generated automatically after removal.

Hi Thanks for your reply. Yes both type of browsers using the same DNS(es) and default gateways configured via DHCP (though I tried another gateway and static IP address without proxying too) I do not use any host files they are empty respectively contains the standard settings (file date 10.06.2009) . Any other 32 Bit WINXP boxes have absolutely no problems with IE 8. As I wrote above any other network access i.e. to shared drives etc. run fine no matter the programs I use except IE related. The problem appears only on this WIN 7 64-Bit box. I have flushed the cache on all DNSes but without any effects. Any nslookup command response withing milliseconds. There is also no difference in using the local admin account or logged on as a a domain user (with administrative permissions) I could narrow the problem a little in meantime. As long as the web page runs pure static or generated html or even php pages it runs as expected but as soon as there's running any other code on the destination server the problem appears again. working samples are: http://openrbl.org/ http://www.swissinfo.ch Non working samples are: http://www.microsoft.com (all of microsoft) http://www.beatnik.ch (a web page based on Joomla and php from our band which I host within the same subnet as the external proxy address) and even http://www.networksolutions.com/ Not working means that it takes a couple minutes until the page is displayed. Any other mouse click on such page takes another multiple minutes period. Thanks again for your effort

Problem solved! It was the virus scanner (McAffee VS 8.7i) I hope this helps other people sticking in the same problem. Either exclude "Temporary Internet Files" from scanning during access or disable the service at all. Always suspect your antivirus solution first ;-)
