MHT Files Can't Be Viewed Properly
When I click on an MHT File, only the source code appears in the browser. (This didn't happen in the past.) I'm using IE8 on Win 7 64-bit Home Premium. I also got the same problem when I loaded the same MHT in Maxthon (a browser that uses the Trident engine) and Universal Viewer (which is supposed to read MHT and other files). I also tried older MHT files stored in my system, with the same results.I've already tried the ff: deleting the file association MHT in the registry, restoring the system to an earlier date, and updating the system. When I load the same MHT files in two other machines, though (one using Win 7 and another XP) they are shown correctly in IE8 and Maxthon.Given that, I can only guess that there's nothing wrong with the MHT files but there's something wrong with my system. Pls. let me know if you can give any advice on this matter.

I forgot to add that I reset the IE8 settings, too.

I found out what happened. I searched for ".MHT" in the registry of another PC and found out that the .mht key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT was missing.

Hi, I am glad that you found the clue. In Default Programs, click Set your default programs. Select Internet Explorer, click Choose defaults for this program and ensure the item “.mht” exists and it is checked; or, you can click Set this program as default directly. In addition, I would like to share the following with you: Change which programs Windows uses by default Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

I forgot to say that I tried that, too (they were checked, so I unchecked and checked them). I also enabled and disabled IE8 in "Turn Windows Features On or Off", used "sfc /scannow", and tried loading the mht files in other browsers.I was about to reinstall Win 7 before I decided to search for ".mht" in the registry and found another instance in the entry just mentioned.

I have had the same aggravatingly annoying problem with trying to open the many .mht files on my Windows XP using IE8. Every week or so, I try again to a) See if MICROSOFT has at last repaired this. Bearing in mind, I haven't had any problem opening these common files for years. I need, as is very advantageous in my work. Being a mother with 3 children, I work from home to help supplement our basic needs. (Husband a farmer and loves his tractor far more than a whiff of a computer) Sorry to ramble on, but I only HOPE a MICROSOFT TECHNICIANS may realise the behind the scenes of sorting this silly little problem, to them! I have tried GOOGLE CHROME, (Also having problems for me. Now deleted) I detest Firefox, have done for years, as IE seemed so superior, but NO, even Firefox, (now deleted) didn't work. I have exactly the same problem as Ralfyman - see quote - and followed the Answer from him. Searching files displayed IE8 folder greyed out as well as IE7. ALL the updates, all the 100's, 1000's of other bits (perhaps bytes, more appropriate) were available, but not these two folders. So what on Heaven as answer sure doesn't seem to be on Earth. MUST be yet another MAN made thing. Always rushing and missing out, or miss-spelling one tiny word in the language and can't ever get around to fixing it. SURELY this should be an automatic patch dowbload and added to whatever other umpteen dozen "Security" patches THEY send. Now if anyone has an easy to follow instruction on how I ALWAYS read .mht files. Very quickly, one other weird thing. If I transfer the .mht files by usb fob to my laptop, it works, just as Ralfy implied. But when transfer back again to my desktop, it IS readable ... for just 1, sometimes 2 openings. Then back to usual dumb refusal of IE8. So fails on many peoples IE7 and on IE8 as well. Yet works in others. Ralfy, I know nothing about HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT 's except used Windows search files, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and was no trace of that on my pc. ???? Please, if ANYONE can give in lay terms an answer until MICROSOFT fix it, without having to find some obscure browser, please, please say. I cannot promise to cook the person a delicious dinner, but I can say, my gratitude would be long remembered. Tania MzTania_Vella@live.co.uk
