MAILTO options not working windows 8.1 office 2013

cannot get any mailto options working..

That happens with WLMail.exe for enabling the File, Send commands in IE too.  The fix is that you need to re-register WLMail.exe as the default E-mail client even if it appears that it already is.  In the case of WLMail.exe you can do it by starting ComputerDefaults.exe and this has to be done each time WLMail is installed or repaired.  However, on my Surface RT which has Outlook 2013 there is no sign of Outlook in that dialog, so I don't know what the equivalent re-registration procedure would be.  Try asking in an Outlook forum, referring to this thread.  Otherwise, try installing WLMail (from Live Essentials) and I can try helping you with that.

Good luck

Hi Phill_Canberra,

What happened when you choose "mailto" ?Did the mailto option work before ?

Please check this setting in the path :Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Associate a file type or protocol with a program

Also check the registry values in this path :

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\URLAssociations\MAILTO\Userchoice

Best regards

Thanks for your reply. I have just checked and the registry setting is there as is outlook as the default mailto.

It did used to work. I am trying to fix this for a friend. Outlook 2013 all of a sudden wouldnt open on his laptop so he uninstalled and reinstaled outlook and since then no mailto options work. It doesnt think there is a default mail program insatlled..

Any others ideas??

Did you install WLMail?  You would then have it to switch from to go back to Outlook.

Hi Phill_Canberra,

Please repair the office to have a check :
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features
Navigate to the Office and then right click choose "change" then "repair".

Change the file association to another program and then change it back to have a check.

" Outlook 2013 all of a sudden wouldnt open on his laptop so he uninstalled and reinstaled outlook and since then no mailto options work"

Considering you have reinstalled the outlook ,there is a possibility that the outlook hasn`t been uninstalled completely when we reinstall the Outlook. We can use the following tool to uninstall the outlook:

Uninstall Office 2013 or Office 365 from a Windows computer
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Uninstall-Office-2013-or-Office-365-from-a-Windows-computer-9dd49b83-264a-477a-8fcc-2fdf5dbf61d8?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

We also can use this tool to clear the registry after we uninstall the outlook .
Fix problems that programs cannot be installed or uninstalled

You may need to look for help from our office forum .They may have some resources to resolve this issue .

Hi Robert,

I installed WL Mail and set it as default.. The Sniping tool then worked. If I then set the defaults back to Outlook 2013 the same issue occurs and it doesnt see Outlook as being installed..

I am trying to uninstall ans reinstall office again now..

Hello,

Unfortunately the uninstall again didnt work. I uninsatlled it myself and reinstalled and still no good

Setting Windows live mail to be the default the snipping tool will now work and it launces WLMAIL. Setting it back to outlook 2013 and no good.. im almost out of ideas.. :-(

I have tried going through the register to see any registry keys under mailto that look out of place and everything looks fine..

But do you have a way of making Outlook re-register as the default E-mail client?  If Outlook is just there as a radio button not as check box for Enable access I suspect it won't be re-registered just switched.  See if your Office product installer has a Repair tool which would substitute?  You might get more informed help from an Office forum.

I have tried unticking outlook to be the default for everything that it possibly can be and then making it the default again. I also tried to repair office as well as the uninstall.

Ill try the office forum and see what they say..
