Lync for Mac - How to customize profile image

We are beginning to roll out Lync for Mac (and windows) and on the Mac side there doesn't seem to be a clear cut (easy) way to customize your icon like you can do in AIM, Yahoo Messenger, etc.  Knowing that I will get a bunch of calls regarding this, how exactly do you do it?  I assume it's pointing to your contact in Outlook 2011, and I checked my contact and it has a custom picture there.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

By default it will take the default picture that you have published in AD. Try changing Photo settings from preferance for "Show default picture" since the user have custon picture in Outlook it might show in MC Client as well.

Hi,

The endpoint users can change the lync photo in microsoft lync client instead of default corporate picture. Then lync photo will be changed in other lync client.

By the way, the lync client can not change the photo from local disk directly like AIM, YAHOO and messager.

Currently Lync for Mac, user does not have the capability to change the picture. they only have the falility to change whether they want to show a Picture or not. If they want to change the picture, they have to ask AD admin to do that in the AD profile.

You can check one thing. login a user from a windows client and change the picture and check wther it get effected to the MAC client also.

Call me stupid but isn't this something that should be customizable, and not this difficult??  Really, why is setting a custom picture such a chore?

The Windows users are able to set a picture, but the Mac users aren't.  There is no area in Preferences to do it.  So from what I understand from above, there is no way of doing it locally?  So if someone wants to set a photo on the Mac client they would need to contact the AD Administrator to do it?  Because it's not pulling the picture that has been set in Outlook 2011.

We are getting close to pushing this out to the users and them being able to customize it and us being able to make it somewhat "fun" will make the sell that much easier.

Thanks for the reply.  Doesn't it seem like a very basic feature that the majority of users would want to do, to be left out?

I appreciate everyone's input.

Unfortunately this isn't possible in the Lync for Mac client.

A way around this is to log into a Lync client on Windows, set the URL for your picture and then log into the Mac client.

we all know that Macs don't belong in the corporate environment, they are toys

I love the hardware, however the OS is not geared for these types of applications

I run a Macbook Pro as my main machine with Parallels and Win7 Enterprise

you are always going to see Lync being behind on the Mac

it is not a preferred OS to run a Lync client since the OS lacks a lot of QoS features and telephone hardware support

however i run it everyday on my mac with some crack snapple and pop and limited feature set, but i'm a techie

if you want to run the Lync client failsafe, get a Win7 machine and you are golden

You're hilarious. Can I give you points for comedy? Comedy from the previous millennium, of course. Comedy, nevertheless.

I'm curious as to your rationale for using the 'toy' OS as the host system for your win7 VM, as opposed to running it natively. There must be some perceived value there. Maybe you think successful hosting of VMs is something toys do these days?

Some failing in OS X may keep you feeling comfortable about your out-of-date understanding, but is clearly not at the root of this feature's lack of existence.

I appreciate the multiple confirmations of the feature simply not being present in Lync.app, but still have trouble comprehending the possible technical reason for the lack. It just seems like the lack is in the care being applied to releasing a fully-polished application for OS X.

I completely agree with you that M$ needs to make better Mac software - i'm having some major issues with Office 2011 especially Outlook 2011 - and that is definately not Apples fault

The reason i'm running on a Mac is due to customer demand - I'm an IT pro and more and more of my customers are introducing them as BYOD - however the OS does have very limited application support compared to a Windows system - hence Parallels and Windows 7 Enterprise on my machine

I do love that i can work on a customers VPN from the Windows side and keep the Mac side off the VPN so i can do research, browse internet, do mail and Lync etc. Really comes in hand when testeing Lync between two different organizations from one machine

I just had my first experience today dealing with Apple tech support - took me 1.5 hour to get to the right department and i had to INSIST on them gathering system information, they were going to wash their hands

After upgrading to 10.8 and latest build of Parallels 7, my machine will completely freeze from time to time
It could be 10 minutes into my work or 3 hours into my work

Apple is pointitng fingers at Parallels, since that is running all the time - and Parallels is pointing fingers at Apple because the whole OS is freezing

Apple however did finally say they would escalate, so now there is a two day wait for the escalation engineers to review my reports and data and they will then get back to me

I haven't seen a Windows machine freeze completely since before the NT days

that was one of the main features when NT came out that everything was isolated and an application would't take down the host OS

but the Mac OS is definately a lot more cute than Win, however right i have to forcefully restart my machine up to 5 times a day, making it very problematic to get any work done

and yes i still think it's a toy with it's own place in the market and we need Apple to keep MS honest

I really like both companies, and thank God we are all free to have our own opinions

thanks for your reply....  (and yes i AM VERY DISAPPOINTED i can't change my piccy in Mac Lync)

when setting it up from the Windows Lync side to point to a URL it will carry over to the Mac side - just don't mess around with it once set (that's how I lost my picture on the Mac and stumbled on this post to figure out WTF)

I was actually trying to show a customer how to add a picture and didn't realize i couldn't do it from the Mac side - it was pretty embarrasing

did you figure out that you have to change the picture in the microsoftonline portal?

The individual user needs to login to the portal and update the profile.

If you have IIS running on your local machine just put you photo in the default root and set the url like http://localhost/myphoto.jpg in the section in Lync settings that asks for a URL.

This post is absurd.  To say "the OS is not geared for these types of applications" shows a complete lack of understanding about operating systems in general and dismisses the fact this is an example of (typically) poor Microsoft product development, nothing more.  Are you suggesting on OSX it's not possible to write a library that can update a photo on a remote server via network communication?  Might it rather be the case Microsoft favors their antiquated OS over OSX and doesn't bother writing an equivalent client for the OSX platform?

Microsoft sees the writing on the wall with poor Windows 8 and mobile device sales.   If they want to expand into a cloud services provider they might start by doing what companies like Google, Mozilla, Amazon and Netflix (etc) do, and make something that works across all platforms.  The days of Windohs are numbered and this sort of thing continues to put the nail in the coffin.

It is 2014 and Lync for Mac still does not support changing the profile picture.

Hello,

This thread starts in 2011.  It is 2014 and Lync for Mac still does not support changing the profile picture.

This is evidence of weak product management.

Wait Wait Wait. . . .Did you just call Macs "TOYS" !???

Hahahahhahahah......Please give me 5 min to laugh this one out.

OK you have used MacBook Pro but itseems like you definitely don't deserve it(May be you have not used it to the max to realise its potential).

May be when it comes to Lync, MAC support might not be upto the mark but please DO NOT make such stupid statement like "we all know that Macs don't belong in the corporate environment, they are toys"
