just wondering if its necessary to add SIP trunk ip in route add on Edge servers?

Our internal network is 172.xxx.xxx.xxx but our sip trunk varies from 148.xxx.xxx.xxx to 195.xxx.xxx.xxx

How is you sip trunk connected to you Lync?

You only need a route from the edge to the mediation server. If a Lync user connect external he should be able to make a call.

A Sip trunk will never connected direct through Lync edge. You would use a SBC (Session Boarder Controller)

Agree with Holger, this is the mediation server's job.  It will transcode the various Microsoft/Lync codecs into G.711 which will be understood by the sip trunk.  Even with media bypass enabled, edge traffic will still flow through the mediation server so this route is just not necessary.

If Edge Server is defined on topology, then you need to make sure Edge Server is working normally, or PSTN call may fail.
