Hi!

What it is the difference between Lync 2013 Client and Skype for Business Client? We have customers who is running Lync 2013 and they do not want to use Skype for Business yet. Unfortunately the security patch KB3039779 upgrades Lync 2013 to Skype for Business. What can they expect? Will they have any issues? Will changing to Lync 2013 UI make any diffrence? The server is running Lync 2013.

I use lync 2013, and I just realized that the icon has Skype logo.

I think it will not be an option anymore, soon.

I would not expect them to have any 'issues' per se, aside from the UI being different.   We have been running the SkypeUI on Lync 2013 for several weeks now with no issues aside from things being moved around.

So, aside from UI changes - it's the same experience.   

You can, absolutely, toggle users back and forth via policy - the registry stuff just addresses 'first run user experience'.  If you haven't tested and gotten in front of the Skype UI upgrade - i recommend that you just  let it finish out.

Hi,

Base on my understanding, it is only UI change. As it is still the Lync Server 2013, there is no functional changes between SFB UI and Lync 2013 UI.

You could choose update to SFB UI or rollback to the Lync 2013 UI as you want. If you want to rollback to the Lync 2013 UI, you need to delete the KB KB2889923 and disable the Skype for Business UI mode from Server side.

The differences in the UI are fairly small but enough to confuse some users. The theory is if they have a Lync 2013 server backend they will receive the Lync 2013 client UI, if they have Skype for Business or O365 backend then they will receive the Skype for Business client UI.

You can control the UI with a policy provided the Lync Server is on the latest CU updates with:

Set-CsClientPolicy -Identity Global -EnableSkypeUI $true

and

Set-CsClientPolicy -Identity Global -EnableSkypeUI $false
