Lync 2013 Mobile Client and Data Security

I have the following question in regards to the Lync Mobile Client.

1. For the "Remember Password" functionality, how and where is the password stored?  This applies to both Android and Apple platforms.

2. For the chat history, how / where is this installed?  Is this encrypted?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi, this forum is focused on development with the Lync client SDK. I will try to direct your question to the appropriate Lync mobile client forum.

Hi Jim,

 1.  It stores in the cached file on the mobile. It is both for Android and Apple platforms.

It is almost the same as Lync profile on desktop computer. The data includes sign in information, address book and contacts.

 2.  Conversations and calls on Lync Mobile devices are not synchronized with the user's Microsoft Exchange mailbox. It means that conversations that occur on your Lync mobile device will be displayed only on that devices conversation history and nowhere else. A related case for your reference:

Thanks, Eason.

You're reply helps.

If I connect these devices to my PCs USB port, will I be able to obtain the password  or chat history in cache?

Hi Jim,

You could use a Persistent Chat client to solve your concerns regarding caching since the chat history (in p-chat) is maintained server side and not cached in the app. Might be an option?

My Requirement is to find out if someone takes an iPhone / Android device and plugs into in a PC with USB, could the chat history be recovered?

Also, could the password be recovered?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi - Not unless the device is rooted - for android. for a normal device, you'll not be able to see the data or system directory to which lync is installed. but if a device is rooted (android version of iOS's jail break), then users will be able to see the directory - but again, not sure about getting the password from cache file from it as I haven't tried it yet.

Hi Murali.

Please let me know how you make out getting the data from cache.

I'm in the process of attempting to do some analysis on this myself.  Resource on the net are slim at best.

Hi,

I'm also interested in knowing how the password cache on the mobile device is protected.  If you root the device, can you retrieve the enterprise credentials?

If this is the case, then I will raise this as an issue to my employer, as it is a security risk.

Thanks,
Eric
