Lync 2013 - Desktop crashes when desktop sharing

I am running the Lync 2013 desktop client with latest updates on Windows 8 against a Lync 2010 Standard server (with Edge server deployed). Lync is crashing only when I share my desktop out. I can view a user's desktop for hours, however when I share my PC's desktop Lync crashes within 5 minutes. I am getting the following error in the event viewer:

Faulting application name: lync.exe, version: 15.0.4454.1506, time stamp: 0x50d185e0

I tried to change Theme to Windows 7 Basic, test for share desktop are working fine for all my client/user. 100 % worked

Control Panel -> Performance and Information Tools -> Adjust Visual Effects -> Uncheck Enable desktop composition

We have fixed it, but I'm still not entirely sure what the cause is.

We built a new image, which is essentially:
- Windows 7 x64 Enterprise, with .NET 4.5.1 and IE9, patched as of May 1st, 2014.

Any of our new Lenovo machines that are imaged with the new image do not have the problem. Same drivers as the old image, everything else is exactly the same, but something with the updated image fixes the problem. Maybe it has to do with security patch updates / ordering / etc. Hard to say.

On another forum we found that this can be fixed by installing KB2670838. This is very strange considering it was an optional prerequisite update for IE 10 and published back in February of 2013.  If you do a quick web search of the KB ID you'll find people had issues after installing this update unrelated to Lync 2013.

My organization uses Configuration Manager 2012 to install windows updates and this update is not showing up under All Software Updates.  It's a very odd fix but it is working with Desktop Composition (Aero) enabled.
