Lync 2013 - Desktop crashes when desktop sharing

I am running the Lync 2013 desktop client with latest updates on Windows 8 against a Lync 2010 Standard server (with Edge server deployed). Lync is crashing only when I share my desktop out. I can view a user's desktop for hours, however when I share my PC's desktop Lync crashes within 5 minutes. I am getting the following error in the event viewer:

Faulting application name: lync.exe, version: 15.0.4454.1506, time stamp: 0x50d185e0

Hi,

Since the issue only occur when you share your PC's desktop, you can try to run clean boot to disable any of third party services to avoid any conflict with them.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us

If the issue persists, please try to reinstall Lync client to test.

Same issue with a fresh Office 2013 install build Lync 2013 15.0.4454.1506 MSO 15.0.4454.1504

I have done a fresh install of Windows 8 with the same results.

I have ran into this issue as well (Fresh Windows 8 install w/ Lync 2013 client connected to a Lync 2010 Server) and when I disconnect any external monitors it stops crashing. Hope this helps!

I am experiencing the same issue on one particular model of laptop. Lync 2013 SP1 32bit crashes on Windows 7 Pro 32bit when sharing the desktop.  There are no external monitors connected and the video drivers for the Intel HD Graphics 4400 are at the latest version. Not really sure what else to check at this stage unfortuntately...

Are you using a Virtual Machine console viewer of some sort? Like VMware vSphere Desktop/Web client. I realized displaying a VM console (which is like a VNC connection) over a Lync desktop sharing session was the cause of Lync crashing.

No nothing like that. I think this is definitely down to the video drivers as I uninstalled them and let Device Manager install the generic VGA drivers and hey presto no issues.

Just to add - I have now tried the following:

Removed Silverlight
Reinstalled Lync 2013 SP1
Updated to .NET 4.5 from version 4
Updated to the latest Intel HD Gfx Drivers

Still crashes. Using generic VGA drivers is not really an option as the user experience suffers badly.

Annoyingly, I installed Lync 2010 32bit as a test and there were no problems with screen sharing with this version of the application.....

I tried to change Theme to Windows 7 Basic, test for share desktop are working fine for all my client/user. 100 % worked

Control Panel -> Performance and Information Tools -> Adjust Visual Effects -> Uncheck Enable desktop composition

Good workaround Victor.  I can confirm this has worked for me but I would like to understand the root cause of why Aero and Lync 2013 are not playing well together on this particular computer. Other W7 machines seem to work fine with Aero switched on.

Is this a Lenovo T440 laptop by any chance?

I ask because I have around a dozen T440P and T440s laptops, all of which are running the same exact hardware (Intel HD Graphics 4400) and every single one of them has the same issue: Lync Crashes as soon as you try to share the desktop if Aero is enabled.

Same as you, I can disable Aero and Lync works, but that's not an acceptable solution for some of my users.

It is actually a Lenovo X240. We have a number of these and one T440P but the 440 is in use and so not available for testing at present. So, the $10000000 question - is this a Microsoft, Intel, or Lenovo issue!?

May 29th, 2014 7:28pm

We're finding this issue is only present on our Lenovo X1 Carbon (new model). Appears to be an issue across new models of Lenovo this year, I'm guessing due to the Intel HD Graphics drivers?

Issue does not happen on Lenovo T430, X230, T420, etc. Only on the newest Lenovo.

Also, FWIW, I found newer drivers from Intel (March 2014) that Lenovo hasn't repackaged, and installed them (note: can't install via setup.exe because it appears to be hardcoded to not install on lenovo machines, but can install drivers through device manager) - and the issue persists.

Additionally, I have one machine that mysteriously works. The leading theory is that it's working because the image that it's running was build recently with all the patches integrated as of May 1st. Going to try to reimage other machines to see if they also work with the newer image.

Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration in Office?  The easiest way to do this is through Microsoft Word.  Head to File -> Options -> Advanced, scroll down to the display section and click to enable Disable Hardware Acceleration.

Tried that - did not help.

We have fixed it, but I'm still not entirely sure what the cause is.

We built a new image, which is essentially:
- Windows 7 x64 Enterprise, with .NET 4.5.1 and IE9, patched as of May 1st, 2014.

Any of our new Lenovo machines that are imaged with the new image do not have the problem. Same drivers as the old image, everything else is exactly the same, but something with the updated image fixes the problem. Maybe it has to do with security patch updates / ordering / etc. Hard to say.

Thanks for the update!  Don't forget to mark yourself as answer.  That's still strange if it's the same drivers and hardware, but you might be right, some dll in some combination it didn't like.

It worked for me in X1 Carbon Laptop with W7 64bit OS. Thanks Victor!!

I had the same problem. I tried this and it worked.

Step 1 : please make sure Office 2010 and Lync 2010 both are fully uninstall from your machine.
Step 2 : DISABLING DESKTOP COMPOSITION.

On another forum we found that this can be fixed by installing KB2670838. This is very strange considering it was an optional prerequisite update for IE 10 and published back in February of 2013.  If you do a quick web search of the KB ID you'll find people had issues after installing this update unrelated to Lync 2013.

My organization uses Configuration Manager 2012 to install windows updates and this update is not showing up under All Software Updates.  It's a very odd fix but it is working with Desktop Composition (Aero) enabled.

I tried both things disabling Aero through Themes and just disabling desktop composition both worked fine for me. Using HP Elitebook with windows 7 Enterprise.

Can't Microsoft build products which don't clash with their own. Also can someone tell if there is a place where we can send feedback on smileys . Feels like they went 15 years backwards with those

Upgrade of the HD Graphics 4600 Driver to the latest version, solved the issue for 2 of my machines, not needing the workaround.

Thank you!. really worked
December 16th, 2014 9:00pm

Our organization has recently started deploying the L540 from Lenovo. It has the HD Graphics 4600. We noticed that Lync 2013 Desktop sharing caused Lync to crash.

Thanks for this thread. The ultimate final fix was to install the KB2670838. All the other fixes worked as well with the exception of the video driver. We had the latest driver.

Thanks again
