Lync 2010 to Lync 2013 Migration questions?

Hi,

I am planning to migrate/upgrade Lync server 2010 to Lync server 2013. But before that I want to clear some question.

I have the following setup:

1 Enterprise pool
6 Front End servers
1 Back end server (Under Cluster)
1 Monitoring server (Collocated with Archiving servers)
2 Edge Servers

Questions:

1. Will external connectivity and remote signin will still work if I Keep Lync 2010 Front End servers for new Lync 2013 Edge servers?
(Plan is to migrate Lync 2010 Edge server first, then migrate all Front end servers )

2. What is better solution? What pros and cores.

Thanks.

Hi,

It is recommended to deploy Lync 2013 Front end first. You can refer to the following order to migrate:

Deploy Lync Server 2013 front end pool

Connect Lync 2013 pool to Lync 2010 edge servers

Move test users to Lync 2013 pool

Add Lync 2013 Edge and configure federation routes and Media Traffic

1) Yes, they should, though I don't recommend it.

2) I would generally deploy the 2013 front ends and get them ready (load balanced and web services published externally), swap the simple URLs (meet.domain.com, dialin.domain.com, lyncdiscover.domain.com, etc), move the users to the new FE, swap the edge, then migrate the CMS.  However the exact order doesn't have to follow that flow.

Tip: Your new external access edge pool name can remain the same so you don't have to change your pic federation and notify external contacts who may have hardcoded it in their own federation config.

Edit: Pros and Cons to my method - Getting the simple URLs moved and the user on the new FE gets access to new functionality quickly.  The edge is less important in terms of added functionality (for example, you can use persistent chat without updating the edge), so migrating that last is fine.  The migration of the CMS is up for debate, it may make sense for you to move it a bit sooner.
