Lync 2010 Exchange 2010 Lync client MAPI COM server
Hello All
We are running Exchange 2010 sp1 and Lync 2010 Enterprise edition, Lync is a consoladated install. All outlook clients are running 2010. Users can automatically sign into Lync using DNS and SRV records, but soon after signing in, users get prompted for credentials.
The dialog box thats prompting the user says "Microsoft Lync 2010 MAPI COM SERVER" The user tries to enter password and username, (in many different formats) but can never authenticate. What is causing this promt? is it the lync client? Also it looks like
the link client cant connect to the Exchange server, users get "lync is experiencing connection issues with the exchange server..."
I have verified that Autodiscover is working correctly all outlook 2010 clients are able to find all the Exchange web services using Autodiscover. Also all users have many smtp addressess stamped on there mailbox, one of the smtp addresses is
user@mydomain.com. This smpt address is also the users sip address, but this is not the users primary smtp address, its just one of that they have.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for the same solution. What exactly causes this prompt? Is it related to Lync not being able to connect to EWS or not?

Yes, I am facing the same situation here, this happened after OCS to Lync Update, this happens when outside of corporate Network or a network status change, say I change from cable to WiFi.
This is blowing my mind!

The Lync MAPI COM error comes from the Lync client attempting to connect to Exchange Web Services. So that we can begin to address your issue, can you hold Ctrl + Right click the lync icon in the taskbar and select Configuration information.
Look next to the field EWS Information, what is the Status?

Has this been identified as an issue or an installation/configuration problem? Thanks.

I discovered that this prompt was coming from Lync trying to connect to the exchange RPC virtual directory. Solution was to disable basic auth on the virtual directory and use ntlm only. Ordering ntlm above basic did not work for some reason.
I only had this problem for external users.

Thank you!

This happens on office 365, where we don't have control over the type of authentication authorized on the web service. Any clue as to what to do there?

Well the normal behavior was to do :
Set-OutlookAnywhere -Name Server01 -DefaultAuthenticationMethod <Basic,NTLM>
You enable basis and NTML for IIS. I'm not sure how office 365 is designed but i assume they push basic only.
When you hit CTRL and do a configuration check. Does it say EWS directory okay?

It happens to me with Office 365 too. But Lync continue to work if I press Cancel.
Here is related configuration information:
MAPI Information: Lync in the process of connecting to the Exchange server. This process may take few minutes... MAPI unavailable; retrying connection
EWS Information -- EWS Status OK
Any ideas?

First run an https trace (using something like Fiddler2) from a client machine to verify where the dialog box is coming from. Then naturally go from there.

We are seeing this now too. We recently enabled Outlook Anywhere so I assume that is what sparked it. I understand with Outlook Anywhere you will see some normal prompts but this is happening to people inside the network and it won't take
their credentials.
This is very annoying and we're getting a ton of calls to our support desk. If anyone else has had this experience and resolved it I'm all ears. Until then we will start digging...

I'm currently investigating the issue and contacted Microsoft Support for an official answer. When I receive appropriate information, I'll create a nice blog posting on our user-group website (
www.pro-lync.be)
explaining the process.

Magernisha, did it explain a bit?

Pretty much what I had suggested back in May ;) You did an awesome job actually explaining the entire issue and why it's caused though.

Outlook 2010 - is this 32-bit?
Windows OS - is 32- or 64- bit deployed?
Is the machine joined to the domain, user sign-in with AD account (Lync enabled) and Outlook configured (auto via Autodiscover)?

Did you figure out what the issue could have been? did you resolve it ?
I have a similar issue and it is getting progressively worse as the days go on?
