We are part way through a Lync 2010 rollout, currently we are assigning internal extension numbers to users as we set them up for Enterprise voice.  we keep a record of who is assigned which number using a spread sheet.  I have a PowerShell command that sets the users up for Enterprise voice but we still manually go into the spread sheet to get a number.  I feel that there must be a way of automatically assigning extension numbers to users, possibly using the unassigned number range and some Lync PowerShell.  so before I immerse myself into PowerShell I wondered what other people had done.

There are several ways to reach this goal.

Use a database liek SQL, Sharepoint or unambers.

Or create new nussigned numbers in Lync an write a PS script.
