Lync's Share Desktop Feature is slow

I am using Lync for Mac version 14.0.9. The desktop screen share is too slow. On average, the screen refreshes about 10 seconds late. This makes it unusable.

The problem occurs with anyone I try to desktop screen share with (both mac and windows). I have tried completely removing Lync and re-installing using this guide: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2691870/en-us. I don't think this issue is related to bandwidth. I can successfully use other screen share products (WebEx and Google) without performance problems.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

If yes Do we have the windows Lync Client Logs?

If no can you get MAC client logs

Hi,

You can try enabling HighPerformanceP2PAppSharing and HighPerformanceConferenceAppSharing as part of a client policy. Here are details on how to do that: http://d1it.wordpress.com/2013/12/20/highperformanceappsharing/.

Hi Forrest Mitchell,

I believe it is a bandwidth issue.

Check the required application sharing bandwidth at

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg425781(v=ocs.14).aspx.

Suppose you have three users in a meeting, one user shares his desktop, then the required bandwidth is 713kbps+2 x522kbps.

Best Regards,

Lisa Zheng

No, it does not happen between 2 windows clients. It is only between MAC and Windows or MAC and MAC.

Yes, I have the MAC log. Is there something I should look for in the log file or is it possible for me to post the log to this forum?

Are we using multi Monitor in MAC and whats the MAC OSX?

No i dont believe you can share it here is there alternate way?

does changing these setting on mac make a difference?

I am on OSX 10.9.4. This is a laptop, sometimes I hook up external monitors, but I have tried using my native laptop for screen sharing and I still have the same performance problem.

How do I get to he "Screen Sharing Preferences" window in your screenshot?

Also, I looked through the log file and there is a lot of personal information so I don't think I want to post that to a public forum. Is there anything in the log file I should look for? Or is there a section of the log file I could post.

It doesn't look like my version of OSX offers those screen sharing preferences unless I am in the process of sharing my screen using the Mac OSX built in screen share. That makes me think those settings are only for Mac OSX built in screen share and not Lync screen share.

I didn't see anything in the log file that matched your examples. Here is a trimmed down version of the log if you want to take a look. This is the log during screen sharing. I do see a lot of errors, but I'm not sure what to make of them.

I'm having the same problem with slowness with Lync screen sharing on a Macbook Pro with Retina display.  But I would like share one additional detail I haven't seen posted yet:  When I join a Lync meeting with a presenter sharing their screen and more than two people are in the meeting the slowness issue is much improved.  The slowness for me is at it's worst when I'm sharing my screen with a single Lync client or another Lync user is sharing their screen only with me.

I currently have Lync for Mac version 14.0.9 installed.

Thanks for your help with this issue!

From what I Understand is the MAC client has some issue getting or paring the SDP data  ERROR :: GetSDPMedia: HRESULT API failed: 80ee0058 = hr. Get SDP media

And

ERROR :: get_ViewableResources: "Error: returning hr = 8000FFFF"

Do we have any Antivrius or nay Endpoint protection software ?

With data at hand I cannot say confidently what happening

Also we cannot see the resource available to the LYnc client

September 16th, 2014 8:13am

No Antivirus or Endpoint protection.

Also, on the same computer I used VMWare Fusion to run a Lync screen share in Windows 7 and did not have any performance issues. So I don't think it is a bandwidth issue and I think the computer itself is powerful enough to run screen share.

You said you can't see the resource available to the Lync client. How would I check that?

Forrest,

Looks like there's a KB article that addresses your specific issue:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2963362

Try installing that and see if you notice any difference.

Gonzalo,

Thank you for responding.  This KB article is a link to the 14.0.9 (140606) update for Lync 2011 that claims to resolve this problem.  I updated Lync to this version a couple of weeks ago and haven't noticed any improvement when screen sharing.

I see, I had read the update was FOR 14.0.9 but instead it was an update to get to 14.0.9. My mistake.

Are you using a Retina display? Other users are having slow screen share issues even on 14.0.9 but only when using a Mac with a retina display. My guess is it may have something to do with the high DPI settings that OS X uses (so text looks sharper and the same size as before instead of 2x smaller).

If you are using a Retina display, try opening Lync in Low Resolution. Or just to test, you  There's a guide on doing that here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5266

Gonzalo

September 19th, 2014 4:54pm

Gonzalo,

Yes, I am using Retina display on the Mac.  The link you provided on lowering the resolution is linking back to this post.  I'll do some research and see if I can find how to lower the resolution for individual programs on my Mac.

Also, I mentioned previously that if I join a Lync meeting with more than 2 people then the slowness goes away.  Is it possible that in these situations Lync lowers the resolution to improve bandwidth?

Thanks again for your help!

Gonzalo,

I am also using a Retina display although I also have an external display that I sometimes hook up to my laptop. The external display is not Retina. I have found that the screen sharing is slow regardless of the monitor.

I did try opening Lync using the Low Resolution setting and that did not seem to fix the problem.

Mac-N-Lync,

This is the article Gonzalo was linking to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5266. This explains how to run Lync using Low Resolution.

Lisa,

I don't think this is a bandwidth issue. I can use the same computer and run Lync on Windows instead of OSX and the screen sharing works just fine. If it was a bandwidth issue then I would think the Windows version would run just as slow.

Thanks,

Forrest

Thank you for helping.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled Lync 14.0.9 using the link you provided.  I'm still seeing the same slowness with screen sharing sessions.  Also, I used Forrest's suggestion to lower the resolution in Lync but I am still having slowness issues with screen sharing with a single person.  As I mentioned in an early post, screen sharing with multiple people works well.

Thanks!

Hi MAC-n_lYNC,

When the media traffic is happening between two parties the its being done peer to peer and when it happens between more than Two a server side MCU controls the media traffic and quality

Since it working fine between two windows client i would not first look at your overalll network

However I would definitely look at the network setting on MAC client things like the driver version, throttling settings & endpoint protection software or Antivirus is this all

Hope this is helpful

Edwin,

Thank you for your response!

A quick clarification:  The slowness is only occurring when I'm screen sharing to another (single) desktop or the other way around (peer to peer).

Several people have suggested that this is a "network" problem with the Mac.  I'm hesitant to believe this as Lync screen sharing with multiple people works fine.  Also, other screen sharing applications like GoTo Meeting work fine.

Thanks for your help!

I am running into this problem as well in both two- and multi-user chat. Sharing desktops works quickly on Win devices but not from my Mac. There are no bandwidth restrictions and I have all the latest patches/installs. So, since we can rule out the basic environment stuff, can we have someone technical from MSFT look into this and ideally try this out to replicate this in a lab environment?

Mac-N-Lync,

Microsoft just released an update for the Lync for Mac client, maybe it's worth a look to see if it improves your specific situation?

I have been running in to this problem for a few years now and I have had the issue on many Mac's. I have also spent time working on it. I can recreate it now perfectly.

If have more than one NIC enabled Lync slows down to 30k a second upload for the outbound sceen info. If I go down to one NIC upload speeds of my screen jump up to 500k a second or higher. Now to be more clear on the NIC thing. So when I run VMware Fusion or Parallels they had add hidden virtual NIC as soon as you launch the program. Not even a VM just the application. As soon as I exit them completely I can start a new meeting and get the speed back. If I hook up my Mac to my Thunderbolt Display and have the ethernet port hooked up and my WIFI I am slow again.  Kill the WIFI and have just the ethernet (and all VM software closed) and speed is back. So Lync does not handle more than one network connection or interface connected. I can also recreate the issue with Cisco Anyconnect. Again it creates a second virtual adapter and brings the speed back down to 30k a second for screen data. MS please fix this!!

Gonzalo,

Thanks for the heads up on the new update.  I updated my Lync to 14.0.10 and did a reboot on the Mac for good measure.  I've had multiple Lync screen sharing sessions with my co-workers and I'm still seeing the same slowness with the screen updating.

Thanks again for your help!

I am testing Lync for Mac for deployment in our small business.  The slow screen sharing is preventing me from going ahead deploying.  I have tried setting Macs with retina screen to low resolution for the Lync app only and that does not fix the problem.   We are testing version 14.0.10 of Lync.  Audio, video, text chat all work fine.  Just screen sharing is not functioning as expected.  However, it is a feature we need to have working.

Yury_A,

I also noticed that the hotfix was downloaded to my mac as an .EXE file.  Glad to hear it wasn't just me!

January 31st, 2015 12:21am

Heh, that's a good one.  I guess Microsoft's hotfix packaging system isn't so Mac friendly.

To extract the EXE file on your Mac open terminal and type: unzip 480481_intl_mac_zip.exe

.. it will extract the "self-extracting" file, then you can mount the DMG and install the hotfix:

$ unzip 480481_intl_mac_zip.exe
Archive:  480481_intl_mac_zip.exe
  inflating: hotfix.txt
  inflating: lync_14.0.10_141127.dmg

I've been experiencing this problem with slow desktop sharing when connecting with Lync to a Windows machine for some time now.  I installed the hotfix but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

Hot fix does not work for me either. Also, this is definitely not a bandwidth issue. Running a Windows virtual machine on my mac with Lync installed and the screen refresh is great, perfect. However, Lync on my host Mac is painfully slow - so slow it is not even usable.
