Love Windows 7, but can't afford to upgrade from Vista
As I've been testing Windows 7 through beta and RC, I just wanted to express my opinion that I think Windows 7 is awsome. It seems to run better than Vista on my older hardware (Pentium 4 desktop), and I really enjoy the GUI (most notably the new taskbar with the full screen aero peek feature). The pre-release sale was really tempting to me, but even at the reduced price it would have cost me $150 to upgrade to Windows 7 on my two computers. My desktop which has Vista Business on it would be $99 for the upgrade, and my laptop which has Vista Home Premium on it would be $49 for the upgrade. I don't mind admitting that I'm struggling financially during these difficult times like many people are, just barely making it from paycheck to paycheck. Because of that, and because of the fact that I wouldn't be gaining any new functionality for what I use the computer for by upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7, I decided that I couldn't afford to spend the money on the upgrades. I guess I will have to wait to enjoy Windows 7 sometime down the road when I eventually replace my computers (if we aren't on the next operating system after Windows 7 by then). I sure wish that for all the hours that I spent testing this operating system for Microsoft, they would send me a copy of Windows 7 instead of the copy of Windows Vista I'm supposed to be getting. I have no use for the copy of Vista because I already have Vista on both of my computers. I just wanted to post this on here as a discussion because Microsoft needs to know that there is probably a lot of people like me who would like to upgrade to Windows 7, but just can't justify spending what it would cost to do so. Big D - To borrow a phrase from a former president - I feel you pain... But seriously... Where there's a will, there's a way... You say you're getting a copy of Vista. That's more than most of the folks testing Windows 7 are getting for our efforts. Now then you say you have no need for a copy of Vista - because you've already got copies for your desktop and laptop. I'm going to assume it's going to be a retail copy of an upgrade - or maybe even a full license. I'm sure you've been around the block a few times and no doubt heard of a site called EBAY... If you sell that copy of Vista for $100 or more, you'd be 2/3rds of the way there.. No? At the very least, you'd have more than enough for the Home Premium upgrade or the Pro upgrade. (I'd go for the pro version myself, Home Premium will be cheaper later on.)So.. Make it go right... If you get it now, they won't be charging your card until it ships - which should be on or after October 22nd. I'm sure if you tried hard enough, you could do it. Just have to WANT to...

Dont think it specified that directly, but I just thought in general that you were not allowed to resell a MS operating system disc. I guess it's allowed?Desktop: Intel Pentium 4 @ 3Ghz, 2GB DDR Ram, Nvidia 7600GS - AGP type. Laptop: Intel Pentium Dual Core T3200 @ 2Ghz, 3 GB DDR2 RAM, Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics

There's a small advantage to going to school :) Microsoft's Ultimate Steal for students in a US based Higher Education system with a '.edu' email address. Currently Office Ultimate 2007 and Vista Ultimate (product red) are both ~60$ and I am sure once windows 7 goes public, they will change it to reflect that.

Big D - Unless there's something specific in the deal that says you can't sell it - I don't see why not. But then again, I'd hold off on making plans. They may yet surprise you. You may wind up with a copy of Win 7 instead. Handing out copies of Vista doesn't really make too much sense. We'll see..

You probably do too. There have been threads here poking fun at it ever since. I know you know that. Yet, we've not heard a word of clarification from MS regarding it. Microsoft's months of silence speaks for itself. Just where do you come off saying "We'll see"?Gosh, Wolfie, are you even able to sit down?

I did get the one announcing the pre-sale from June 26th to July 11th... I got a letter welcoming me to the beta test and the RC test but never got an offerlike the one Big D got. I've seen reference to the email in question, of course. Why else would I have asked Big D if the deal mentioned anything about being free to sell the copy? If I had the email I could have checked it for myself and gave a more definitive response.So... If you've got the email in question - do you have any insight to the offer? Can the license/DVD be resold? And yes... I'm quite able to sit down just fine.
