Lost internet connection on desktop running vista
I've been using my desktop computer running vista, connected to the internet through an ethernet cable into my router, for three years. Service pack 1 was installed over a year ago. I use McAfee on all my machines. Suddenly, two weeks ago, i lost the ability to access the internet. No recent updates that I recall in this timeframe. I didn't take it anywhere or change anything that I can remember. Wireless computers in the house are fine. My laptop can connect through the cable no problem. Tried a new cable with the desktop, no luck. I tried the usb wireless adapter that works on another computer in the house, but it won't work on the desktop machine. For a while the network name remained, but today I notice that i can only find "unidentified network", and get local access only. What happened? Spent over two hours on the phone with my ISP help tech, still no luck. What happened??? Finally broke down and bought the upgrade to Windows 7, it strongly recommends internet access to update the installation. Tried to upgrade anyway, but it suggested I cancel to go back and remove my computer from the itunes account. In response to a post here, I went into msconfig and unchecked Bonjour, and now it's taking AGES just to log off the computer. After 10 minutes, it's frozen again. Hard shutdown again. Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi, It seems there are two issues: 1. internet connection and low performance upon log off. To avoid confusion, I suggest we focus on the first issue. As I understand, the network worked for a while but now. If it is in this situation, you may re-set router or modem. At this point, you can run the troubleshooting tool to automactically detect the root cause. Please click Start, type troubleshooting and press Enter. Click "Connect to the Internet" under the "Network and Internet" section. Please tell us the result. Regards,Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
