Lost internet connection in Vista
I am having a randomly occurring issue involving my internect connection. I have 3 computers networked and sharing a cable connection, 2 XP home and 1 Vista Basic. I've only had my new Vista computer for a week, but already it has lost internet connectivity at least 3 times. It has happened each time after I woke the computer up from sleep mode. Further more, I can't restore connectivity any other way otherthan to power down the router. Any ideas as to what this might be??

Hello Jenkins, To further diagnose the issue, pleasecheck outthe following MS KB Article to see if this sounds like the problem you are having. If so, the fix is available from the Download Center. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933872 -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Networking) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

I have a very similar issue with a new Dell Desktop with Vista Home Premium. It is wired to a router and two other XP computers are wireless to same router. XPs stay on line no problem. Vista computer does not. I have disabled sleep mode anddisabled IP6. I still randomly lose my connection and the time period could be anywhere from 10 minutes to 24 hours between interuptions.

I've been having this issue for a few months also, and I can't figure out the culprit. I'veapplied KB933872 a long time ago, but it didn't make any difference. It's got to be something else. I must also say that when Vista loses connection in this fashion, the machine takes more than 10-20minutes to log off, and I usually do a hard reboot because the wait time is ridiculous.

It seems that a LOT of people are having this issue. Is there any resolution to this problem yet?

I have the same problem My Vista system did work for many months but I had to go to a new Linksys router and ost internet connection on the vista system. I have LAN connection to printer and other systems. I have tried everything including the KB patch mentioned in this thread but no luck. I do intermittently get access after a reboot or restart of the router but it is less than 20% of the time. This is very frustrating. Please, if anyone has a solution please reply.

This issue was resolved for me by simply setting my network connections manually instead of getting the IP, etc, automatically from the router - it seems that the laptop was trying to get a new IP address every time it came had been inactive for a while (perhaps why some have reported this being fixed by changing power saving settings). The laptop has now not dropped it's connection for several days and appears to be stable. Hope that helps someone.

This is not the same situation for me. I have tried to create a static IP address but run into the same problem. I only am able to get on with local access and can not access the Internet.

I had also unticked IPv6 (think that was what it was called) and selected the least environmentally friendly power setting.... no telling what single or combined items have done the trick. I unticked IPv6 first - no luck. Leaving it unticked I then changed the power settings - stayed connected longer but would eventually lose internet while still being connected to the network (other computer on XP on the same network happily connecting to the internet at this time). I then set static ip, gateway, etc, and have had no problem since. Regardless of being happy that mine appears to be working now, this should never have been a problem and certainly not for the seemingly large number of people that are having this problem. As an aside, it might be interesting for someone to note that this was only through the wireless network that it was a problem. When the internet dropped I could plug a network cable directly into the modem/router and it would go on the internet without any problems - unplugged the cable and wireless connection would not let me access the internet. PS3, XBox360 and smartphone all using wireless and getting internet without problems. Might be interesting to plug directly into the modem router and see if the problem disappears - this might then narrow down the problem?

Hi, I am also having a problem with my Vista laptop. I have a network set up with a wired desktop using XP and a new Linksys router that has both wired and wireless capability. I only loose Internet connection with my laptop not the desktop. I also loose it while I am surfing the Web and not only when coming out of sleep mode. If I restart the computer, the Internet comes right back. Yesterday, the Internet actually came back without rebooting, but ittook about20 minutes. When the Internet disconnects, my Network is still intact. I have access to my file sharing and wired printers throughthe desktop. Where is IPv6? In Internet settings? I'll look up how to set a static IP and Gateway (unless you can explain a little more). Anything else? You wrote "etc." so I'm not sure if you listed everything you did. I'm not going to bother downloading the patch, since everyone on this post stated that it didn't work. Thanks

It would be interesting to see if you suddenly get the internet back if you plug your laptop into your modem router and don't use the wireless connection when the internet has disappeared. IPv6 can be found in the connection setting - not on a Vista pc at the moment, but you should be able to click on the wireless network icon, go to your network and then click a link to see the settings - it is around that area somewhere! You might like to try setting the laptop to a static IP in the same area first - worked for me.

I have been having the same problem for a while now; it used to manifest under heavy network load (e.g. streaming media) but having just had to rebuild my desktop and laptop with Vista again then its back with a vengance. MY Vista desktop is hard wired and drops connectivity, so that rules out for me the scenario above. I have tried th eIPv6 disabling and also made sure there are no power management settings getting in the way. I'll let you know how I get on if this fails and I need to go static.

I finally figured out my issue. It was related to my Linksys WRTP54G Vonage router. Apparently, Linksys automatically updated the firmware and it an untested FW by Vonage. They backleveld my firmware to a known good firmware and I know can access the internet with my Vista system.
