Lose Internet Connection/ Win 7-Ultimate/
Win. 7 / ultimate machine / on windows network / In past 3 months since installed has for no apparant reason lost ability to connect to the internet. When this happens, it does NOT stop incoming or outgoing mail from our Exchange server, nor does it keep me from accessing other network resources such as the shared folder on our server, or network printers, or the ability to see and connect to other computers on the network /via Remote desktop connection. I worked on it and tried everything I could imagane all three times.....and in the end....all three times I simply gave up, left the machine for several hours.....came back....and it was working....... It has now done it again....and it just happens (as luck would have it) to be my owners machine where i work. I am the IT guy, or I attempt to be at least. IPCONFIG /ALL shows NOTHING out of the ordinary please help if you konw the answer. The only software he has added to the machine is Office 2007, ITUNES, and BlackBerry Desktop Software. All else is just the stuff that came on machine.

I have a very similar problem, although I've not simply come back and it was working again. Setup is: Win 7 ultimate 32-bit, running on an Dell Dimension 4600 computer, connected with hardwired Ethernet to my router, which is then connected to broadband internet. Recently the original system hard drive went bad, so I replaced it with a new one. I keep my data on a second drive, so did not lose data. After re-installing Win 7 on my new c: drive, it worked fine for several days, and then out of the blue the Internet connection has a red X, and although the networking on my home network works fine, I have no access to the Internet. ipconfig looks normal. Restarting does not seem to make a difference. The only fix I have at the moment is to use system restore, and go back and restore to an older system config, and then it works again, for a few days, and then boom, it happens again. Hybernation is currently enabled.

Hi, You can try the following steps to test this issue: 1. Temporarily disable Firewall and third party antivirus program on the computer for a test. 2. Boot the system to Safe Mode with networking and see if the issue persists. If not, please also boot to Clean Boot environment to determine the possible cause. 3. Update or reinstall the NIC driver and update the router’s firmware. 4. Configure the connection to obtain an IP address automatically: a) Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) to Start Search bar and press "Enter". b) Right-click the network connection and click "Properties". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. c) Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and click "Properties". d) Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". e) Click "OK". f) Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click "Properties". g) Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". h) Click "OK". i) Reboot the computer. Meanwhile, I would appreciate your help in clarifying the following: 1. Is this a domain network and is there an ISA server on it? 2. The topology of the network. If the computer is connecting to a router, please bypass it and connect to the network directly for a test. 3. If there are any other computers on the network, do they also meet this issue? I'm not sure on the answer to #1 - how would I know ? Our home network is very simple. I connect my desktop through hardwired ethernet to a Linksys wifi router, and our laptop connects to the same router over wifi. Our broadband internet connection is via a broadband router(Cox cable - Motorola surfliner), which connects into the same Linksys wifi router. No other changes have been made to our network other than my re-install of Win7 on a new hard drive. On #2, I did actually try directly connecting my computer to our broadband router (so no other network nodes), and this did not change the issue at all - still no internet connection. On #3, there is another laptop on the network (wifi), and it has no issues. In case I had a virus, or some malware, I did ensure that my MSFT Forefront was running fine, and it is. I've disabled hibernation, so I'll give that some time to see if it resolves the issue. If not I'll try your above info.
