Loosing internet connection. Win7 (no network access or limited access)
Please help!? I am running a win7 acer laptop with a ATHEROS ar5b91 Wireless network adapter and a broadcom netlink gigabit eathernet adapter. I have a fixed line broadband dsl internet connection (7Mb) behind a vodafone router. I can browse the internet fine for some times hours, or less and then the next min i have lost the connection and there is a yellow warning sign on the signal bar saying no network or limited access. I have to disconnect and reconnect to get the internet again. Under event viewer(administrative events) there are loads of warnings and error msg's. The warnings are mostly to do with DNS Client Events Event ID 1014 or k57nd60a ID 4 or WLAN-AutoConfig ID 4001. The errors are mostly to do with Dhcp-Client ID 1002 ect or atikmdag ID 43029 or 52236. It keeps happening and is really annoying. I Have a feeling it is either my router that is faulty or there is a problem with the phone line(ISP) or is it something to do with windows? I would appreciate any feed back on this plz.

Hi, Typical troubleshooting is to power off the modem and the router. Wait 2 or 3 minutes. Then power on the modem, wait for signal lights, then power on the router. Test with an ethernet cable to network adapter. Finally, check the driver version of the wireless adapter. The most recent that I could find is 8.0.0238, 10/5/2009 for Windows 7 from the Microsoft Update catalog. http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/ScopedViewInline.aspx?updateid=c2e8ef6a-9629-4f42-a6e7-92df998c057e Click the Start button, type devmgmt.msc in the search box and select device manager from the results. Expand the network adapters, select the wireless, select properties, select the driver tab, and verify the driver version. While there, attempt to run the update driver. A call to the ISP tech support should resolve the possibility of the the signal dropping on that side. They can confirm the modem to ISP network stability. Sometimes the ISP's DNS server will have a glitch or a change which requires your modem to be reconfigured from their side. If checking all the hardware and drivers doesn't resolve the issue, then it may be the router configuration.

Hi, As you say there are a lot of errors on DHCP, can you check to see whether the time of the error matches your disconnection time? And do paste the error here... When you get disconnected, please go to RUN-->cmd-->ipconfig and then paste the result here, I need to see what IP Address you own at the time of disconnection. But to look at the similar cases, there could be a problem with the wireless router firmware which is not compatible with your wireless NIC. so you ve gotta upgrade the access point firmware. Hi there! Sorry been a while since i used my pc at home. Was just browsing the internet and then after about 20min the same problem happened where i lost connection and the dreaded yellow warning icon appeared on the signal bar. The only way to get it working again is to disconnect the wireless connection and then re-connect for internet access. The errors match the disconnection time and the error in question this time was: "source= DNS Client Event ID=1014 Task Catagory= none" "Name resolution for the teredo.ipv6.microsoft.com timed out after none after none of the configured DNS servers responded. Hi Nano! The driver i have is a more up to date one then u mentioned. Driver date 05/10/09 version: 8.0.0.238. I do keep restarting the router but that is just a short term solution and i am looking to resolve this issue. I am constantly having to either switch on/off the router or having to disconnect/reconnect to the router and its getting a bit annoying now. I have an older XP desktop pc that is only connected to the router via cat5 cable and it never seems to lose the connection.

Btw what the wireless signal/strength like say once you get connected prior to losing it's connection? Alternatively try rolling back to the previous driver Lastly if you could give us the exact model or series of your acer laptop, that would helps

Hi Daniel Ho! My laptop is a Acer Aspire 5536. AMD Turion X2 rm-74(2.2Ghz) 64. 4Gb memory. ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. It came with Windows Vista Home premium but i have since up graded to Win 7. First it was the home version but now I am running 64bit ultimate. I had the same problem when i was on win 7 home premium and the same with win 7 ultimate where i keep loosing internet connection. Where the browser says cannot display page or server not found and the yellow warning sign on the signal bar. The signal strength is always full as i am only a couple feet away from the router. I cannot roll back to a previous driver as it is the one standard with windows when u install it.

Hi Stephandt, I reviewed your original post and found that you had the atikmdag ID 43029 or 52236 error listed. This is related to the ATI video adapter. This error seems to cause multiple types of problems, including system problems. That could be one issue. http://search.amd.com/us/_layouts/search/search.aspx?csquery= atikmdag &collection=all-us (search with atikmdag) When looking at the specifications for your notebook, there are two display adapters listed. I don't believe there is a driver from ATI and Acer does not provide one. see download drivers at the top right: http://www.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDHomePage.aspx Acer support: http://www.acer.co.uk/acer/service.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&miu10einu24.current.attN2B2F2EEF=3734&sp=page15e&ctx2.c2att1=17&miu10ekcond13.attN2B2F2EEF=3734&CountryISOCtxParam=UK&ctx1g.c2att92=122&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=2980211862 I would also review the recommended settings from your ISP for router use and configure the Vodafone router to those requirements. Also, try using WPA or WPA2 with AES for your wireless security. Check that the Vodafone router is updated to the latest firmware. Finally, it appears that you must use whichever chipset driver Windows provides, as there is none from ACER or ATI. (M780G\HD3200) So, it does seem to point to the router, with some driver issues on the notebook.

Hi Nano! Happened again today. This time the DNS error was: "source= DNS Client Event ID=1014 Task Catagory= none" "Name resolution for the name www.stopbadware.org timed out after none after none of the configured DNS servers responded. Funny thing is I have NEVER been to that site or heard of it. So must be something to do with the ISP. I will have a look at dose links u provided and get back to u on the mater. I should have been more specific. Review the settings and firmware for the router to rule that out as the problem. The links were for reference, to show that there are no drivers available. You stated the ethernet connection is ok, so I would suspect wireless settings\configuration for the router. Dropping a wireless connection is usually due to wireless network adapter drivers, but you have what is available. That's a strange message to receive, but it is a legitimate site.
