Sometime this can be overlapping permissions; give everyone full control and restore permissions after you do the maintainence.

I hear you. I think this situation is due to the vast majority of us that were running XP and failed to purchase Vista when it came out. Vista had this dreafdfull permissions and take ownership stuff but we are only finding out about this now as we get to know Win 7. I like the thought of having a more secure OS than XP, but resent the stupid way 'permissions' has been handled. There must be a simpler way than some of the lengthy tutorials that show ways around. We need to be able to take ownership, and get admin privileges with one mouse click and equally important ( for security ) be able to put it back to default ,also with one click. I am sure someone will write a script.

Some of the folders you are trying to access are not really folders, e.g. "documents and settings". They are called junctions and are there to allow legacy programs to interface with Windows 7's folder structure. What was in Documents and settings is now in C:\Users\<your user name>\.

Try right clicking the install file and select "Run as administrator".

You are not looking at the right folder. Put some bizarre file name on your desktop and then do a search to find the right folder. The user profile is not in the same location as in previous win os's.

1. In Windows 7 you can see a list of the junction folders using a command prompt. Open a Run window (Windows key+R), type cmd /k dir /al (note the three spaces) and press Enter. The results will be a list of all the Junctions for the user folders, showing the name of the old XP user folder and the name of the new folder in brackets. 2. To add Take Ownership to the right-click menu, look here http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1911-take-ownership-shortcut.html?filter[2]=Networking%20Internet

Hello, This is by design. You cannot access the folder or files are protected by operation system even if your current user account is Administrator. System Volume Information is a hidden and protected system folder that the System Restore tools uses to store it information and restore points. In Recovery folder, there are two files: Winre.wim and boot.sdi. With these two files, you are able to boot the system to Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and do a repair without inserting a Windows 7 installation disc. If you want to access the protected folders like System Volume Information, use the following method, but I do not recommend you do this. It may cause some potential problems: 1. Right click the System Volume Information folder and choose Properties. 2. In Security tab, click Edit and then click Add. Type in everyone(without quote) and click Ok. 3. Then Everyone will be listed under Group or user names, click Everyone, and check allow full control option. As BurrWalnut said, the Documents and Settings, it is a junction. A junction point is also a protected operating system folder that points to another folder. The junction point is an important part of application compatibility and does not contain any data or other files. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the Documents and Settings folder has been replaced with Users folder. All of your user profiles are saved in C:\Users\User name folder. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thomas Lin

I am having the permission problem with directories and files that I myself have created, along with directories in 'Program Files (X86)' , and 'user/myid' This is a serious problem as i installed Quickbooks and when I tried to create a company file I was notified I didn't have sufficient authority to write files in the directory I had created on install. This is not an isolated problem and it needs strong attention NOW. More and more of my files are becoming unavailable as time goes by. When I try to change the permissions using my administrator ID I am told it worked when it hasn't.
