LogonUI.exe error causes a continuous reboot in Ultimate x64
I have a Dell Latitude E6400 running Windows XP and Windows 7 Ultimate x64 in dual boot mode. Windows 7 had been operating since October with no problems. Since last week I have not been able to logon to Windows 7. I keep getting the following error; Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: C:\windows\system32\LogonUI.exe This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more information The computer then reboots. The problem may have been because I shut down the laptop too quickly as I was in a hurry prior to the problem, but this is only a guess. Alternatively the secure login may be messed up (Embassy Security Center via Dell control point). I have reloaded a Norton Ghost image from 20 days ago but after a successful log in and reboot I get the same message again. I have tried startup repair but it has reported no problems. Going into safe mode results in the error, "windows must now restart because the plug and play service terminated unexpectedly", which then results in a reboot. Updating all the drivers, the BIOS, and removing the Dell control point software after reinstalling the Norton Ghost image and prior to rebooting, made no difference. Any suggestions would be appreciated (other than a clean re-install)?

Hi, If you can get in to safe mode (during start up, hit F8 before windows starts and select safe mode), you can try running the following as an administrator on the command prompt (start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt): sfc /scannow This may require installation media to re-copy some of the protected operating system files, but it may be able to get your system back to a workable state. -- Mike Burr

I was wondering if you are using a third party program to customize the logon screen?

Does the issue occur if you create a new user account and log in with it? If not, the problematic user profile can be corrupt. However if the issue occurs with all user accounts, please temporary remove your antivirus and check the result. If the issue persists, I suggest you manually delete the file C:\windows\system32\LogonUI.exe. Then restart and run Startup Repair.Arthur Xie - MSFT
