Logging in to the domain on Windows 7 to Windows Server 2008 alls I get is Black background.
I have Windows Server 2008 SP 1 Environment with everything setup correctly, and on my desktop it used to be vista ultimate then I upgraded to Windows 7. When it was Vista Ultimate, the Wallpaper I had set on the Domain for Certain Users worked fine; however, logging in to the domain on Windows 7 alls I get is Black background. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?I have thus far tried, check the check box for make windows easier to see, I have tried checking all the drivers.

Hi,First, I would like to confirm the following questions:1. Does the issue occur when logging in the computer via a local account? 2. Does the Domain account have enough permissions?3. Which version of Windows 7 is installed on the machine, RC, RTM or Beta?At this stage, I suggest you create a local administrator account and then log on the machine via the local account. Can you see the background normally? Thanks,Novak

I have the same issue and it related to group policies. I removed some of my policies and it went back to the default background. You might start with no policies, or a subset and see what happens. I am still trying to find out what is the culprit for me. I also have a login time of 2 1/2 minutes. How long is your login time?

In answer to your question Novak:1.This issue does not occur when I log into a local account, just when logging into a domain account.2. Everyone has the proper permissions needed to access the wallpaper.3. I am using Windows 7 I am not sure the Version, though I got it from Technet Subscription. When I login to the Local Account the Backgrounds work just fine, its when they login as Istated previously to the Domain account. I run windows Server 2008 SP1, and everything works fine on Windows Vista, I can see the proper backgrounds when logging into the domain through one of my Vista Computers. As for you Matthew my login time is about 1 minute to 1 1/2 minutes.I think there are alot of benifits to Windows 7 vs Vista but its frustrating when things don't work the way they are supposed to.

I would SERIOUSLY consider starting with no group policies and adding your GPO's back one by one and see what happens. I have no problems with XP and our policies, but using the same policies on 7 creates MAJOR problems...

Since the backgrounds work fine in local account, we can eliminate the system cause. This issue can occur if the domain accounts do not have enough permissions. At this stage, please login to the machine via domain account and then change to Aero themes. What's the result? If themes cannot be changed, we can consider that users do not have correct permissions. Please recreate a domain accound and grant the enough permissions (such as administrator) for a test again. Meanwhile, please also refer to Mattew's suggestions to narrow down the cause. Thanks,Novak

In response to your question/suggestion above, I have allowed all permissions and unconfigured all display/theme/apperance/etc.. and it changed nothing, An administrator is on a different group then that of the one giving me problem, as a Domain administrator logged in I have no problems what so ever; however, logged in with restrictions under the group/group policies, it creates a problem, I have tried all sugestions, and have yet to find the solution. My next stepp will be to create a dummy Policy and user and start eliminating the cause by adding in policies and seeing what works and what doesn't.I would like to point out in case it may have an effect on the system, that all my profiles are saved on the server, there are no local profiles, as far as saving, desktop, videos, documents, music etc...Except for Administrator accounts, those create a local profile, everyone elseno matter the group (and there is only 2 groups)is a roaming/folder redirection.

Since the domain administrator can login normally, we can conclude that the issue can occur by restricted group policy. Please perform Mattew's suggestions to modify Group Policy settings one by one for a test. Thanks,Novak

After Further Testing on a seperate machine, I updated the Graphics Driver, and still got the same problem; however, while still preventing change on the server end for group policies, going into the personalization area and trying to change the background, the black goes away and reveals the correct background specified by the group policy. Any ideas as to if this is a bug or what?

Has this issue been rsolved at all. I am having the same drama and need it rectified. We use the desktop background to deliver urgent and important messages to our students. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The resolve to this issue is that with Windows 7 it will go black; however, it has been found that if you do set group policy background make sure you set the ability to change the Background to Disable, and then on the Workstation/Desktop computer if you login and it is black you click in the personalize and attempt to change the background and it will reveal your assigned background and it won't change unless you change the background. This will permanently correct this issue for the logged in user.
