Local Ping but No Outsiide Ping - Vista
I can PING my PC within my local network via the Local IP. Using my outside IP I cannot ping my PC. The device I ping with is my iPhone via an application. I do disconnect my iPhone from my home network to test outside IP. It is this reason that from outside my Local Network I cannot access my FTP Servers, Apache Severs and so on. I find my PC's local IP in command prompt (ipconfig), I find my PC's outside IP via www.ipchicken.com I do not get outside ping on any network I connect to, only LOCAL network ping. I have done log resets for IPv6, IPv4 and the other one in command prompt but I don't know what that did. How can I get outside PING working? Blonde015 Windows Vista/Windows Live User

I am properly connected to the internet by both those articles. I can tell you it is not a problem with my internet connection, its my system. If am getting the exact same results on any network I connect to (which I do) its a system issue. My computer is ignoring PING I think. Yes I have checked with all settings in my Firewall, they are correct and allow Ping as far as I could find (even tried turning off firewall, no luck with outside ping). Troubleshooting is no use for me, so please do not give me more troubleshooting because it is not the answer, and I have been through all of them and my computer passed and had no problem with each but didn't give me outside network ping. Where is it I can find the settings for ping? Could my PING problem lie within my system model (Asus F50GX Laptop)? Blonde015 Windows Vista/Windows Live User

Thank you for clarifying the issue. And sorry for the late response. What happens when you try to ping your external addresses? No route to host or no response message? Is the router configured correctly?Sabrina TechNet Community Support

Well do you really think is the router if I only get local network ping on any network I connect to? The router is configured to let everything through and doesn't block anything (also its firewall is turned off) on my home network, other networks I am not sure. The response I get when I use external addresses to ping is "Request Timed Out" for each ping attempt. To give you more of an idea, even through my USB 3G internet I can't ping via the external address. What to do?Blonde015 Windows Vista/Windows Live User

The tracert if I tracert with my external IP picks up the router the first hop, the rest of the hops 'the request timed out.' I went to ipchicken on my iPhone and my computer whilst both connected to my WiFi Network and both had the same external IP address. I gather this is partly the problem or is it?Blonde015 Windows Vista/Windows Live User

Hi, Base on the current situation, I would like to explain that how the commands Ping and Tracert work: Ping verifies IP-level connectivity to another TCP/IP computer by sending Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Request messages. Tracert is a route tracing utility that display a list of near-side router interfaces of the routers along the path between a source host and a destination. When a trace either fails to reach its destination or no ICMP Time Exceeded messages are returned, the output shows an asterisk in each of the time columns where the round-trip time is usually displayed, and shows a "Request timed out." See How Tracert Works According to the above information and the issue which you encountered, it seems that there is the problem with the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP). Therefore, please still check if the router blocks the ICMP. If not, I think you need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to check.Sabrina TechNet Community Support

OK I have a Telstra Thompson TG782T Gateway Router. Telstra's manuals have no information on checking if ICMP is blocked. There is no way to connect the manufacture (no website, no phone numbers). With some advanced computing I added a rule to 'firewall and advanced security' to allow ICMPv4 Echo Requests. I added to rule to be sure ICMP is on within my PC. If you can't help me any further I will give up and won't have external PING and what that means I can't do. Additional Info: Router has no ICMP/IPv6 Support Blonde015 Windows Vista/Windows Live User
