Local Access Only
Apologize if there's other thread on this, searched but nothing helped.I have been experiencing difficulties in getting internet access. Most of the time, i willget the local access only. This is very annoying. I have tried many things, resetting IP,disabling IPv6, disabling all firewalls, changing network type (home, public, work),everything.NOthing seems to work in a consistent manner to solve this. Most of the time i get it fixedafter many tries ofcombination of resetting, disabling, changing everything.I have another machine using Vista and it works fine.So the problem must be with W7. Any help?Flagged this with Microsoft feedback system, but wouldn't count too much on them, this problem has been around since Vista and it has not been fixed once and for all!!!Thanks guys.

Are you on a domain or No domain?Though you probably have already done this i'll ask it anyways. Have you tried updating your network card drivers? Also, are you using Wifi?

By 'local access' do you mean that you get an IP from your router, and can see your local (i.e.: home) network, but you can't get internet access ?If so, this sounds like a setting on your router... if you are using MAC address filtering, make sure that the MAC address is set up for both local and internet access...Also, if you are experiencing this problem using wireless, have you tried a direct-cable to the router ? (That almost always eliminates any of the wireless security and MAC filtering problems...) Lastly, if you can, connect with a cable directly to your modem - this will entirely bypass the router and any quirks of the router.Good luck !

Hello,as you have said this problem occurs also with Vista. There it helps to deactivate network cards that are not used. It seems that Vista like to build a network bridge or something similar.Hope that works

@plcalderaz: I'm not in a domain. My network card drivers is updated.@jimvec: I don't use a router, just a simple switch so there's no mac address filtering, and no wifi. THis is a simple cable connection.@babababo: Definitely no unused network card is active as i only have 1 network card.

One fairly simple additional suggestion - can you try with anotherpiece of CAT-5 ?if that doesn't help, the next place I'd start exploring is your ISP...Did you have to "register" a MAC address with your ISP ? I know when I first set up my home connection, Comcast wanted the MAC address of the primary computer (at the time, only one machine - no network...) when I set up the wireless router, I had to alias the original MAC address of the original PC in the router config, for things to work perfect. I had also experienced low digital signal quality from comcast, so the modem would just drop off-line... the digital cable box would pixelate the digital channels quite bad... they finally sent out a tech who had to string new coax from the street to the house - that fixed the issue. Good luck !

sorry mate, don't understand what do you mean by CAT-5? i'm100% sure it's not my ISP, as other computer works perfectly using the same cable connection. my ISP does not register my MAC address

He means, the ethernet (Network) cable itself. hes suggestion to try to use a different network cable from your Computer to the Router just incase the cable went bad.

Exact same issue, and also none of the suggestions helped. The weird thing is, for about 2 weeks Windows 7 wifi worked flawlessly for me. It would detect networks and connect instantly, no issues. Now it gives "local access only" with no internet and may or may not connect eventually after resetting a bunch of times.Nothing changed - no new hardware or software, but it suddenly stopped connecting. I have no idea what the problem is, but it annoys the hell out of me. Used to have the same thing with Vista too. I'm on an Inspiron 6400 - if anyone's had the problem and figured out what causes it, I'd be really grateful.

Even though its been stated no Software changes have been made, does that include windows update? I think the windows update is enabled to Automatic by default. Has anyone tried a system restore to a Point BEfore the issue started happening to see if that corrects it? Just kinda, a shot in the dark at this point...

For what it's worth, I've seen similar symptoms with wireless networking under Windows 7. Specifically, it will connect to the wireless network, send out a DHCP request, then ignore responses from the DHCP server (I've verified this by capturing traffic to and from the wireless access point.)I can usually get it to work by doing a manual release and renew, disabling and reenabling the wireless network adapter, or disconnecting from and reconnecting to a particular WLAN.Notably, I had similar problems with Windows Vista early on in testing (Vista beta 2, RC1 and RC2), and the problem pretty much resolved itself when Dell released updated drivers upon Vista's actual release. But I never investigated the issue on Vista, so I don't know if the symptoms were exactly the same.

Well I`we had the same problem after upgrading from Vista Ultimate . Windows 7 finds wifi network and connects to it, but local access only. I`we tried connecting to my Zyxel router with 3 different cables and got the same (just local access) and no internet connection. The thing that helped me was that I went on my other computer and downloaded from internet some program called (network repair ,or something), I do not recall the name correctly. Then I`we installed it on windows 7 and my network connection was repaired. I really do not know how, or what was changed by the program, but it is working right now. I have no intention to advertise any kind of software, soGoogle is your best friend!!
