Live Tiles not working in Windows 8 Pro

Hi,

my live tiles do not work.

the ones that show some information (e.g. weather), show the information but when I click on them or when I click on other Microsoft tile such as music, maps, photos etc, the icon plays the animation to go to full screen and then simply disappears and I see the Metro interface.

this happens both with local account or microsoft account.

I have created another profile and they do work with this profile, nevertheless I need them working in my profile.

Can you pls help me?

thanks

Try to set your PC on clean boot (or selective startup) in msconfig. After the PC restart, check if the launch behavior of the tiles would change for the better.

If it does, then one of the items on the Services and Startup tab caused the problem. It's a matter of trial and error now to determine which of those services/applications caused it. I would suggest starting on the non-Microsoft items listed on the Services tab.

dude actually your live tiles think that you are on a meterd connection and you will be charged ...so just turn the meterd connection to non metered...

then if you are using a mobile broadband then don't connect using the mobile brand software..instead of that connect through computer connections...

to do this ...plug the device and wait until its recoconised ...then go to the area where date and time will be displayed in taskbar...there you will find a network symbol...click there and go to and connect it,,!!!!

OK here's my take:

I had the same problem with the tiles not working.  I chatted with MS; that did not help. After tons of trial and error, I found out that it was my profile type of "Private" that made the tiles not work.  I changed my profile type to "Public" and they have worked since.  I've not seen this solution listed anywhere on the web; I searched for a solution until my fingers were raw (ok, kidding) but never saw anything about profile types of private not working.  I think MS has a serious bug going on here; I do think there are tons of reasons why they are not working; it's just hit and miss to what's going to work for anyone.  I wish MS would fess up that there is a problem.

I can't find any option anywhere to set a profile to "public" or "private". Can you tell me where you found this?  Thank you!

Exactly. Same Question from my end. how do we set profile to private or public?. Thanks.

Bigger question: Why would you want to if you value your privacy?
November 29th, 2012 4:04am

OK people here it is the long awaited answer to this problem. I just figured it out so when this fix floods the internet you'll all know where it came from :)

Right here's what you do...

Go through all your live tiles opening them one by one, open a live tile and if it opens then closes again point your curser to the left side of the screen and swipe down, The crashed tile will be visible, right click on it and choose "Close" now back in metro find the tile that just crashed right click it and choose "Uninstall"

NOW!

Open the "Store" tile then right click inside it, A green bar will appear at the top of the screen, Click "Your apps" At the top left of this window in the dropdown box, make sure it says "Apps not installed on this pc" and in the next one "Sort By Name" now scroll across and find the app you just uninstalled, Click on it and choose "Install" bottom right of the screen.

That's it you just fixed the first tile. Now systematically go through all your tiles finding the ones that crash closing them uninstalling them then re installing them from "your apps" in the store. If after re installing a tile it's not visible in metro then right click in the metro window and a bar will appear at the bottom of the screen with a small circle bottom right of it that says "All Apps" Click on it, Find the app you've installed, Right click on it, the bar will appear again at the bottom of the screen, bottom left of the window inside the bar find and click "Pin to Start" this will add the tile back into Metro.

I figured this out all on my own after finding no help at all online or from Microsoft support.

This fixed ALL my apps and they all work perfectly now.

Please note that the "Mail" "Calendar" "Messaging" and "People" tiles are all part of one installation package called "Mail, Calendar, Messaging, People" I spent ages trying to find these apps seperatly only to find out they are all installed as a package :)

The answer to this not happening again is don't use cleaning programs in windows 8 they break your Metro live tiles :) I used Yamicsoft Windows 8 Manager and still the tiles broke from using the Junk File Cleaner included in it and that is a dedicated Windows 8 program. Keep regular backup's and restore points.

So! There you go and remember where you heard this first.

Now back to producing some music :)

Happy Windows 8'ing people Bye!

Phil

What do I do if my Store tile is among the tiles that don't work?

I have to admit my initial excitement at upgrading to Windows 8 has left me with a disabled optical drive that MS tech support couldn't restore...if I can't resolve this tile issue I plan to dump Windows 8 and rebuild Windows 7...a happier place where everything worked.

What do I do if my Store tile is among the tiles that don't work?

Apparently there is a utility which repairs it somehow...

But apparently it isn't enough?...

Hi,

have you tried this What to do if you have problems with an app and mostly, have you tried the App troubleshooter that's at the very bottom of that support article? Possibly, that will reveal some security issues that prevent your apps from registering in registry or check their registration/contracts.

Thank you.

Hello,

(This is the same post as one of mine in Communities. I just bring it here as well.)

I faced pretty much the same situation with my apps. After a recent Windows Update, none of the Modern UI apps was able to start. This includes Store and PC Settings as well. Whenever I was clicking on an app, the tile was flipping to full screen then it was going back to the Start screen.

I have tried all suggestions in various forums. It had nothing to do with:
- A specific antivirus (I use Bitdefender 2013),
- Domain,
- Proxy settings of IE,
- Time zone,
- File Permissions,
- Driver,
- Screen resolution,
- Re-installation of my apps (Store was not working).

Everything was working fine, until the Update. My installation was a clean one, version Pro, and I had no intension of refreshing/restoring/re-installing the OS. And no-one could guarantee that the same issue would not happen again after some time!

I noticed that whenever I was clicking on a tile, I was getting some Event entries. The strangest entry was something like this: "Interface not registered". You might want to check if you face something similar. Just go to the Event Viewer under Application and Service Logs -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Apps

Of course I was not able to understand what "Interface" means in this case, but I suppose that the apps need to establish a connection with a proxy service based on a protocol in order for the proxy service to do something they need.

I used the Process Monitor tool and I filtered out what was happening in the system whenever I was clicking a modern app. I traced backwards from where the app process was exiting. The app was quering the registry in a specific key to get a CLSID that would identify the class needed for the app to interface with. The required class for which the CLSID was needed was the "c:\windows\system32\actxprxy.dll" class.

The query had a successful result and the app could get the CLSID. Then a search in the registry was taking place for the registered class with the specific CLSID.

For an unknown reason, and probably after the Windows Update, the specific class was not registered. I manually search the registry and, although a vast amount of processes were referring to the same actxprxy.dll CLSID, I could nowhere find the class registration it self!!! Of course, that was the reason of apps failing in my case.

You can try to re-register the actxprxy.dll class, it does not harm, even if you do not experience the same exact issues. To be on the safe side and since I know there have been implications between well known CLSIDs of actxprxy.dll and ieproxy.dll, I re-registered both. You may want to try the following, but remember to have a backup of your registry first.

1. Open a command line window As Administrator

2a. If you have a 32 bit OS then issue the following:
IF EXIST "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll" "%SystemRoot%\System32\regsvr32.exe" "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll"
IF EXIST "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll" "%SystemRoot%\System32\regsvr32.exe" "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll"

2b. If you have a 64 bit OS then issue the following:
IF EXIST "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll" "%SystemRoot%\System32\regsvr32.exe" "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll"
IF EXIST "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll" "%SystemRoot%\System32\regsvr32.exe" "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll"
IF EXIST "%WinDir%\SysWOW64\actxprxy.dll" "%WinDir%\SysWOW64\regsvr32.exe" "%WinDir%\SysWOW64\actxprxy.dll"
IF EXIST "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll" "%WinDir%\SysWOW64\regsvr32.exe" "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll"

3. Depending on the number of commands executed, you should get Dialog Boxes saying that the registration was successful.

4. Try your app!

I hope that this could help some people out there. Sorry for the long post (I hope someone from MS will see the details and fix this issue)!

OK here's my take:

This is a permissions problem in Windows 8.1, specifically with the Bing-Powered Weather Live Tile.

We set up 4 identical Dell XPS systems in my office about three weeks ago: Every single machine had this error filling the System DCOM error log, with literally thousands of errors per hour, slowing the user's system. After a 2 hour phone call to Microsoft Tech Support today, to get a well-reported error taken seriously, and explaining to Tech Support how to fix an error which has been around since Windows 8.1 Preview, you can imagine our frustration!

To fix it: Go to the Start menu (press the Windows key) and type "Logs."
Review the System error log to see a sea of Red X's. They will be labeled DCOM.

Start Menu > Type Regedit, open the registry editor. File > Search for 2F239 and later 1001.

Edit the Permissions for each item, adding full permissions for your User account, and create an Administrator account in each with full permissions. From a user's posted image:

Then, edit the permissions for DCOM. There's a good how-to if you search this site for it.

This method fixed the error for all 4 users, all using OEM-installed Windows 8 on brand new Dell XPS i7 PCs. This is a known problem, and I'm having trouble understanding why Microsoft Crowd-Tests as a business model, yet chosen to ignore their users telling them there's a problem they need to fix.

spartan two, can you go into more detail on your solution. i don't understand what i should do to try this solution, especially this bit

"Start Menu > Type Regedit, open the registry editor. File > Search for 2F239 and later 1001.

Edit the Permissions for each item, adding full permissions for your User account, and create an Administrator account in each with full permissions. From a user's posted image:"

please help

January 1st, 2014 7:33am

ok, im trying to find all entries that contain 2F239 and 1001 but wonder if it's only certain folders and/or entries that i should be editing here as there seem to be a lot of results especially for the 1001 search????

i don't wanna mess my system up in the process of changing stuff to fix it lol

some guidance would be appreciated.

also how do i go about changing the permissions cos on initial security tab that comes up i changed the permissions for administrators (pc\administrators) to full control and also added my specific user to the list with full control. is that it or do i need to do more?

just doing this gave me an error saying i didn't have access so i went into advanced option and changed the owner to my user account so i could make these changes happen.

i edited the permissions for DCOM using the dcomcnfg.exe app by adding my user to the default lists

is that ok?/what i was supposed to be doing?

the windows store doesn't work after doing what i think is right to do

I just uninstalled the latest microsoft update and now all the tiles are back to working... just make sure that when you go into programs and features you click on the "view installed updates" and then sort on installed date in the last day or week... uninstall from there...

and Yes, it is still microsoft not taking responsibility for their errors and fixing them timely...

store beta just blue window, doesn't open

That may be something else that is more common.  BTW I just noticed that so far nobody has mentioned trying to use PowerShell or WSReset both of which are usually advised in the Store instance of this scenario.  Maybe it is the more frequent case so gets more options given.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/notime/archive/2013/10/18/fix-store-app-in-windows-8-1.aspx

Also there is a troubleshooter which presumably supplements what isn't yet handled by wsreset.

That isn't the blog post that I was thinking of but it is the same blogger.  Serendipitously I think it may be more relevant in here than the other one.
