Link local ip

What is the purpose for this link-local address? What causes it to show up? Is it because my printer is on my network and is connected in this way.

I wondered, because I have never seen this before in my network security map under my computer. It shows my IP address, plus this link-local IP above it.

And the only answers on the web state the function of it to be, communication with in a network between nodes.

Hello GambitMaster,

Do you mean that you got the IP address 169.254.0.0/16?

This IP address is aim at prevent IP conflict.

About Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol(DHCP) client behavior, please take a look at the following blog.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/networking/archive/2009/01/29/dhcp-client-behavior.aspx

Please use the command:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
And then check the result.

Best regards,
Fangzho

Hi FangZhou,

No, I do not mean my that one.In my network security map, I can see every device hooked up to my wireless modem, and each devices IP address, mac, etc...

Now, when viewing the devices, my computers show 2 IP addresses, 1, a link local IP address (Example f80::25ce::dfd6::etc..) 2. along with my computer IP address. Never had this show up before, always just had an IP address displayed. And I want to know what is causing it to show up now?

Simply want to know: What device causes the computer to generate this Link Local IP address? Network printer, etc....????

Thanks

Hello GambitMaster,

Do you mean that you receive the local link IPv6 fe80::25ce:dfd6:etc?
Please share a screenshot about the IP for better analyzation.

If you use Obtain an IPv6 address automatically, but you dont have a DHCPv6 server, you will get the fe80:: address.

If your environment use IPv4, and then you dont need to pay attention to the IPv6.
You can disable the like the following screenshot.

No, I mean it is now showing up in my network security map, and it was not before, just the IP4 address showed before. Now it shows both.
I thought it might be showing now that we bought a new wireless router (Asus RT N66R), or that we now have a new printer connected to the wireless network.

And here is a screen shot of my network, and details.

If you use Obtain an IPv6 address automatically, but you dont have a DHCPv6 server, you will get the fe80:: address.

I don`t understand what a DHCPv6 server is, or if I have one. What my wireless network consist of this; The cable internet modem-wireless router-and all that connects to the wireless router-5 computers-2 TV`s-2 phones-1 printer

If your environment use IPv4, and then you dont need to pay attention to the IPv6.
You can disable the like the following screenshot.

What environment uses IPv6?

I read somewhere, that in networks home group uses ipv6, and if you turn off/leave homegroup, ipv6 address does not show up anymore on your network as shown in the first screen shot. When I check in network-homegroup-, it states, (If you leave homegroup, you wont be able to get to shared libraries or devices.)

So I don`t think that the ipv6 address is showing in my network security map, unless it`s being used for something?

Thanks Fangzhou

P.S. who, where, and what internet provider gives you 10gbps???? that's fast! just wondering from your screen shot.

Hey Dave,

Guess you have the same router.

Do you know a lot about that router?, because I can`t find any detailed settings in the manual. Like what does, enable router advertisement, radio, or other settings mean. A lot different than my old Linksys router from 2007.

Thanks.

I actually do not have that router but have used it before so I just looked up some screen shots to show you where to disable it.

As for router advertisement I would assume this is relating to IPv6 which should notify any device that supports IPv6 that this is the gateway and allows them to get their DHCP addresses.

. IPv6 was already disabled on my router, so that is not the cause of it showing up.

Hello GambitMaster,

About the 10Gbps, it comes from my virtual machine in test environment.

The DHCP server can be the router. You could take a look at the following article.
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd145320(v=ws.10).aspx

The reason why you get the IPv6 address fe80::X is due to you enable the IPv6 and Obtain an IPv6 address automatically without an IPv6 DHCP server.

If you want to make the router as the IPv6 DHCP server, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer ASUS about the feasibility and configuration.

Best regards,
Fangzhou CHEN

Hi FangZhou,

Got this router last month, and default setting for IPv6 is disabled and still is, however the DHCP is Enabled. I would guess if I enabled the IPv6 on my router it would be available to use to connect to the internet and my status window would show that the IPv6 has internet connection?

Anyway, thanks for your help FangZou!
