Latency spikes while playing online games
I was told by a support engineer to repost my issue on this forum, original post below. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/GettingReadyforWindows7/thread/11ebc591-fe99-445b-bd7a-fa6d682ec1cc/ "Every 1-2 minutes while playing, i get a lagspike which increases my latency with about 500 (this is only a guess, since the latency meter ingame is too slow to register it). The increased latency holds on for about 5-10 seconds and then disappears. The game in question is World of Warcraft. I've been searching on Google to find a possible sollution, and while doing so i've seen several people with the exact same problem i'm experiencing. This leads me to believe that this is not simply an ISP issue. I'm using Windows7 RC build 7100. I'm connecting to the internet using an ADSL connection and a modem with what i think is a built-in switch. It's a xavi x5258-p2. Computer specs: Motherboard: Asus M2N68-VM CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940 RAM: 4 sticks of 1gb Corsair 800mhz" Updates after this: I've tried running WoW in compatibility mode without luck. I've also noticed that the latency in Ventrilo spiked to 950 (!) at the same time as i noticed the lag ingame. I've also heard from a somewhat unreliable source that this could have something to do with an issue that Win7 has with routers, however as i said in the original post i'm not sure if i have a router or a switch built into my modem and i obviously can't test to unplug it to test if it helps since it's built in. The support engineer also asked if i were using a wireless connection, which i'm not.

Try uninstallingExpress Gate if there's one, btw you're OC your rig, aren't you? Is there any third party firewall on your rig, also try portforwarding your router/modem, if you could grab yourself another router/modem try swapping it with

Ive been noticeing lags in online games too. Been discussing the matter in this thread already: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/6f8ed002-0eb6-4db3-8c9a-d2737d25691c I believe this only happens when your CPU is at full load. Somehow network packets then get delivered delayed.

Daniel Ho: I don't have Express Gate installed, it just takes extra time as you boot up your computer and i don't have any firewall except the windows one. I'm kind of a noob when it comes to routers, by portforwarding my router/modem do you mean i should change settings in the software of the modem itself? I've tried finding info on how to access it, but it seems that my ISP who delivered my modem changed some settings so that it can't be accessed. I've spent hours on google to find a way to access it and the adress mentioned to work, 192.168.1.1 doesn't lead anywhere. If i were to get my hands on a different modem, would it just be to plug it in or would i have to change some settings for it to be able to connect? Also, what does OC mean? Johannes-H: This happening when the CPU is at full load does seem highly possible. I'm not sure how it works when you set prioritys to certain processes in Windows Task Manager, but could it work to set the network process on a higher priority?

THeiretically yes, cause it would mean packets get processed primarily, before the game itself. Optimization of background Programs in Avanced system settings/Adavnced/Performance might do a similar job. But i dont know which process is the one that processes packet delivery.

I've done some testing and so far, my CPU never reaches 100% load while playing WoW. However, i did switch to prioritizing background services instead of programs and strangely enough, it seems to have helped quite alot. The lag spikes have almost completely dissapeared after i changed it, though i can still feel very short/small spikes even if they are barely noticable.

That further consolidates me that im right with it being a packet priorty issue. I dont yet know to to fix that though.

If you have any other network process which maybe consume much bandwidth is running that time, that may cause this issue.

I've messed around with some different programs to see if it's a specific one causing these problems. After an hour of testing with Spotify turned off, i didn't notice any further spikes whatsoever. I've installed Netlimiter, limited Spotify's bandwith quite alot and "Granted" (a function in Netlimiter that ensures that a certain program always has a set amout of bandwidth) WoW 2mbit down and 500 kbit up. I will do some more testing and post when i've got some more info.

I too notice some oddities with Win7 and playing games with odd lag spikes. Then I started taking notice of when I leave my internet browser (FireFox's latest version) on in the back ground and when I am not. The end result for me is that I see no lag spikes when playing online when the internet browser isn't used.

I've done some more testing, and after the changes i made i haven't gotten any lagspikes whatsoever for several hours. Obviously, it could be some other program than Spotify messing it up, but the "Grant" feature in Netlimiter takes care of it if that's the case.

I am not useing Spotify or anything like that, but i will do some other testing when i got a chance. Btw, can you check at how much % load your CPU is while playing when you got no lagspikes? Does it ever reach 100%? Granting a Game an specific amount of bandwidth might be a solve. I will try try it when i notice lag again.

I did some testing on the CPU a while ago and it was never even near 100% load when the lag occured. If i remember correctly, the load never went above 70% while playing WoW and having a bunch of programs running at the same time.
