Large File Transfer between Win7 and Win2008 Server Fails
About a week ago large file transfers between any Win7 PC and our WIndows 2008 server started failing. The PC starts the transfer then locks up requiring a hard reboot when you try to restart. I can copy the same files from Win7 to a windows 2003 server and then copy those same files from the windows 2003 server to the windows 2008 server. Which leads me to think it is something about win7 and windows 2008 interfacing. The same files transfer fine from an XP PC to the windows 2008 server Any ideas would be appreciated Bob

Hi, Have you install any programs recently in your Windows 7 or Windows server 2008? First, due to this issue did not occur before, we could try system restore to get back to a previous good time point in Windows 7 and Windows server 2008. If the issue persists, we could try the following steps to check the result: 1. Disable firewall and antivirus programs temporarily in Windows 7 and Windows server 2008. 2. Boot Windows 7 into Safe Mode with Networking to test this issue. If this issue do not occur in Safe Mode, perform a Clean Boot to see if there are any program services causing freeze. 3. Try to turn off Auto-Tuning: Type command netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled in a privileged command prompt. Note: You could type netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal command to turn Auto-Tuning back. Hope it helps. The netsh command you mentioned did fix the problem for a period of time but the problem returns I have 4 new Win 7 Dell computers and all have experienced the problem Today I have placed a new non Dell network card in one to see if the Broadcom brand Dell uses is part of the problem I did the safe boot with networking and did not experience the problem. I rebooted normally and the problem returned I will try the clean boot next time to see if that helps - would you suggest doing the clean boot without the netsh int ..... commands Thanks Bob

I am having the same issue on my network. Intermittently large file transfers from Windows 7 to a Windoes 2008 server just hangs. When the client performs the action in safemode with networking, it works fine consistently. I have disabled all non-microsoft services, and the problem still occurs. This is a major showstopper for us.

I'm having the same issue as well. Disabling auto-tuning didn't work. I've found Safe Mode With Networking is able to transfer the files fine. XP machines can transfer files fine. We're running Windows Server 2008 (not R2), could it be an issue with SMB2? Is there a list of which processes are disabled in Safe Mode With Networking? EDIT: I may have found a solution by disabling SMB2 and reverting to SMB1 on all the affected Windows 7 machines. I'll post the results in a couple days when I have something more concrete.

I am getting the same results. I disabled SMB2 on the Windows 7 machine using the following commands:+ sc config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi sc config mrxsmb20 start= disabled Note there's an extra " " (space) after the "=" sign. To enable back SMB 2.0 for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 systems that are the “client” systems run the following commands: sc config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/mrxsmb20/nsi sc config mrxsmb20 start= auto We still don't know what the root of the issue is, but this definately seems to make the "symptoms" go away.

Okay, it looks like this is due to a problem with Symantec endpoint Protection http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/cannot-copy-files-using-smb-20-protocol-sep-11-ru6-and-ru6a At least for us, if we completely uninstall Symantec, the problem goes away. There is no real fix at the moment, and no real explanation as to why this is only happening when copying files to one particular server in our environment. Good Luck.

I also tried this step and resolved issue. However, by disabling SMB2, it affected some applications like AutoCAD and MS Office word. These applications failed to start when we click on the icons of these application. When we check in task manager, it says not responding. So when I enabled SMB2 again, these applications started working. Now I am confused, what to do? If I enable SMB2, file transfer between win7 and server 2008 fails. And If I disable SMB2, applications fails to respond. What to do? Somebody please suggest a resolution.

I would do the following if i was you. Dissable firewall. Dissabled Antivirus which includes the On-Access Real Time scanning. you should do this from the Windows Services. Simpky disable the services. Make sure you have file and printer sharing enabled Make sure that Network discovery is also set to ON. Also, try http://www.thetechgroup.com.au/forum/1/, it worked for me! _____________________________________________________ Real Engineers, Real Problems, Real Solutions www.thetechgroup.com.au
