Large FTP File transfers from Windows 7 to XP
I'm a very experienced user and I've been in a car accident. This an Windows 7 machine and is turning out to be a challenge. I am trying to xfer a large file to Curtis (in a the gigabyte range). It used to be no problem on Vista running SmartFTP and I think I had IIS installed. As of yet, Curtiss and I have not demonstrated that we are in contact at all. So my question is.... 1.) Do I need to install IIS? If so, how on Windows 7. 2,)What kind of user enviroment do I need to set up for him and how on Windows 7 (Ultimate). 3.) How do we set up to transfer this file? Oh, and by the way, Curtiss is not set up either. Renee

http://www.cerberusftp.com/ rsync would be better for large files, do not forget to adjust the firewall rules.

I have downloaded and installed Cerebrus. Thankyou. Does Curtiss also need to install it? Renee

You'll need to allow an exception for Cerebus in general (all ports). TCP ports 20 & 21 are standard for active FTP and I believe any random port > 1024 for passive transfers (it'll be different each time and may even use several at once). Cerebus is an FTP server, your friend will need an FTP client; I recommend Filezilla (http://filezilla-project.org/). I've also found the Filezilla server to be more stable, but a bit more difficult to set up than Cerebus. IE itself can also be used as an FTP client.

Wow. I knew the older IEs could but users here have had difficulties with windows 7. I think Curtis already has filezilla loaded. Thank you. I am concerned about establishing contact with him and making sure we are getting past firewalls etc. One thing I need is a way to to look at ports and a way to tell Windows 7 that the port is ok or Curtiss is ok or both? If your friend is already using Filezilla then all he'll need is your external IP address and whatever username/password you set up for him. On your end you'll need to set up port forwarding on your router to forward incoming connections on port 21 to your machine. As I said previously you'll also need to allow a general exception for Cerebus in the Windows 7 firewall, incoming and outgoing. And remember Filezilla and Mozilla Firefox are two entirely different animals - although the FireFTP addin for Firefox works as a pretty good FTP client too...

I knew he'd need my external IP address and we've already been over that. I think he has firezilla. As far as the internet is concerned my concern now is the two verizon boxes. One is a router and the other is the verizon modem. I think I need the password to the Verizon modem and I have tried the passwords supplied and I do not have the password. I know how to determine my external IP. Renee

If you have a modem and router, the modem "should" be in bridge which means you do not need touch it. To check login to the router and find the WAN ip listed, if the WAN ip is a public Ip (not a 192.168.x.x or other non-routed IP) then you only need to forward the ports listed above. If you setup the server for passive mode and have the client use passive mode you will not need to worry about the upper ports as passive mode will tell the client what ports to use. you go into the cerberus server configuration--->>>server manager----->>>> (the default range is 11000 ~ 13000) and set what you want to use depending on the connections to the server 100 is plenty

pfpw....two phone calls to verizon... They have changed the password and 1.) the moden software has a bad keyboard bounce and it will not even take the serial number from notepad. It appears I am going to a lot of trouble to eventually "never mind them". They have a service call in and I hope the guy is here in the morning to let me know that they never needed to touch it to start with. I do think I'll keep this open to see if Curtiss has questions. Hi Renee, If the firewall on the server side blocks the connection, you cannot get the connection established. The server side need to check it. You only mentioned that large file cannot be transferred. How about small files? Aurthur, Thank you but we have found that his side is doing the blocking. We have resorted to US mail and DVDs. Renee
