Please repond with simple step-by-step intructions. Is there a number to speak with someone? What is "the deframention file"? What tool did you run?Did the report say that you have "contiguous" files or "contagious" files? Please post the entire error message(s) exactly. What antivirus application do you have installed? Is it up-to-date?What other antimalware applications do you have installed? What version of Windows, including service pack, do you have installed?

Thanks for answering. I first opened the control panel. Then when to performance and maintence. Then Defragmention to see if I needed make space. There were alot of blue lines I believe it said contagious file. I'm all most sure. After receiving your reply. I updated the Morton anti-virse app and ran a Norton Live scan. Don't have antimalware application. The newest windows, Windows 8? It is running alittle better but it is now stalling when I am typing.

Disk Defragmenter doesn't really gain you any space on your hard drive. As files are written, modified, and deleted, the Windows file system may scatter parts of a given file in various physical locations on the hard drive. Defragmentation is the process of rearranging these parts so that a given file is "contiguous " (that is, all of the parts of the file are next to each other). This makes disk reading and writing more efficient, and thus, a bit faster.Windows XP does have a tool for deleting unneeded files in order to gain space. This is called Disk Cleanup. It can most easily be run by clicking Start > Run and then typing cleanmgr.exe then clicking OK. You will be given an opportunity to approve the deletion of various files. Unfortunately, however, removing files in this way does not usually release enough space to make a significant difference if your disk is almost full. If you go to My Computer and right click on the icon for your C: drive and select Properties, you will see a pie chart showing how much free space is available. There is a button for Disk Cleanup on this screen, which you can use instead of running cleanmgr.exe as described previously.\I assume that by "Windows 8" you mean Internet Explorer 8. There is no "Windows 8" currently available to the general public. Do have Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7?There are a lot of reasons why your computer is running slowly. The following from MVP Malke summarizes things nicely:Some reasons for computer slowness:1. Computer hasn't been maintained - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Maintenance 2. Computer is infected with malware - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware 3. Hard drive is too full. Remove unnecessary stuff, uninstall unused programs. Don't forget to back up!http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Backing_Up4. Flaky third-party software. Toolbars and add-ons are particular culprits in this area. Uninstall toolbars (Google, Yahoo, ISP-branded, etc.) and look carefully at what add-ons are in use in your browser(s).5. Computer has too many unnecessary programs/processes running in the background. Manage your Startup:For XP - How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310560 The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx For Vista/Windows7 - Start Orb>Search box>type: msconfig and when it appears in the Results box above, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator".Autoruns is also very useful.6. User is running a bloated/invasive antivirus program such as ones from Norton and McAfee. Replace with a better program. I recommend either NOD32 (commercial) or Avast (free). Avira is also good but the free version has an unpleasant nag screen (Google for instructions as to how to disable this). User may also be running more than one real-time antivirus/firewall/security program.7. User has installed new programs that are processor and/or memory-intensive (Photoshop, AutoCAD, Mathmatica or the like) and doesn't have the necessary hardware power.8. Hard drive is failing and is in PIO Mode. This is very dramatically slow (like being back in 1985).
