Laptop fails to connect to wireless networks from restricted accounts
Greetings,A laptop fails to connect to the wireless networks I have tried (at least three) unless I use an account with Administrator privileges. I figured this out after troubleshooting for a bit. You might think that that I don´t have a problem, since I have connected, but this is a sure way to get hacked! How do I work around this problem? Configure the connection from an Administrator account, log off and then try to see if I can connect with a restricted account? Surely, there has to be a better way because the exposure time is sufficient for malware to be downloaded to the machine.I hope someone knows the answer.Regards,Jean-Pierre1 person needs an answerI do too

Do you have the Windows Firewall turned on? Do you have Windows XP SP3 installed? What anti-virus software are you using? How "restricted" are these "restricted accounts?" It sounds like you've locked them down so that they can't connect to anything, you may want to loosen that bit of the restriction at least.-B- http://www.officeforlawyers.com | http://www.onenote-tips.com Author: The Lawyer's Guide to Microsoft Outlook

Ben,Thank you for the response.Yes, the laptop is running Windows XP SP3 with the McAffee anti-virus and firewall. I have disabled the MS firewall completely and as service, because I have found out that occasionally, when Microsoft sends patches, they turn it on and with two firewalls on, performance on the box tanks. As far as a restricted account, I mean a regular account. That is how they are listed on the box.Jean-Pierre

Regular accounts should be able to connect to wireless just fine. What's the exact error you get when you try to connect to a wireless network? If you don't share any resources on the laptop (few people do) you can turn off the Windows File and Printer Sharing for the wireless network adapter. That will help improve your security a little - though the firewall and A/V should be sufficient and hopefully the wireless router you're connecting to has some firewall properties in it as well. -B- http://www.officeforlawyers.com | http://www.onenote-tips.com Author: The Lawyer's Guide to Microsoft Outlook

Ben,Well, on this particular laptop, they don´t. I can define and connect to any wireless network from an administrator account, but, even with the connection and its WEP key defined and stored, I cannot connect to the wireless network if I use a regular restricted account. As far as your recommendation, well on my machine, I never share anything. Thank you for reminding me about doing this for the wireless adapter.Regards,Jean-Pierre
