Lan access but no internet
I posted this as a new thread so as not to interfere with http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/a025e0e1-0bf9-4e64-88b1-186b0e677aee The issue is basically the same. I can access the lan no problem, just cant get internet access. Network is not my skillset unfortunatly, so I just cant figure this one out. Using Win 7 Pro, 64bit. PC is connected to netgear nb9w adsl router via ethernet. Problem occured after an automatic reboot after windows update. I can ping the router. The PC will successfully lease an IP Adress using DHCP. Have also tried a static IP with no success. If I ping a web address (I use www.tpg.com.au as they are my ISP) I get: Pinging www.tpg.com.au [203.12.160.187] with 32 bytes of data: reply from [172.18.56.1 ]: destination host unreachable <--- Router IP is 172.18.56.1 So it appears to be resolving the URL fine. I initially suspected the router, and have since rebooted. Have also disabled all firewalls and AVG antivrus. My wifes Vista laptop works fine, and my work laptop (vista) also works fine. Win Mobile 6.1 was also able to connect.

Ok, tried nslookup to www.tpg.com.au. Using a different pc on same router, so cant cut and paste. non-authoritatiive answer 203.12.160.187. Contrary to last post (was done at work) pinging www.tpg.com.au reply is : reply from [172.18.56.10 ]: destination host unreachable, which is the ip address if the win 7 box that cant connect, not the router. more googling suggested that I had '2 network connections', one home and one public location. Tried to delete home but it would not let me. Disabled the connection, then re-enabled and only have a home connection now and it works fine. Why is this so? What is the home/public location all about?

Its working now, and I understand why it was not working. Just dont get the intricate details of the inner workings of networks. Given that I am a developer perhaps its time I undertook some detailed studies in the realms of networking. Can only add to my skillset!
