Keeping RAS Connections Alive During Logoff / Logon on Windows 7.....
I am connecting to our corporate domain by VPN over a RAS connection through an aircard or a tethered connection. I am having some difficulties getting Windows 7 to preserve the RAS connection during the logoff phase. The KeepRASConnections registry doesn’t appear to be working in windows 7. On my Windows XP workstation I edit the KeepRASConnection registry key to 1 and I can log off and log back on and the connection persists. I tried the instructions in this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950918 The instructions in this article didn't work in Windows 7. Would there be a workaround in Windows 7 to keep RAS connections alive during log offs and logons?

Thanks for the reply. When I tether a device like a Blackberry it is basically a dial up connection that you have to create. Once the connection is established, the VPN software is launched and the VPN software is configured to log the user off of the session. The user then has to log back on using their domain username and password. This ensures proper logon to our domain (scripts running to map drives etc.). With a wireless connection this isn't a problem as Windows 7 "remembers" the connection. But with a dial up connection (tethered) it disconnects when the VPN software logs the desktop off. In Windows XP changing the KeepRasConnections key to 1 always preserved the dial up connections during log offs and logons. In Windows 7 if you change they key value to 1 it doesn't preserve the dial-up connection during log off/ log on.

I cannot find any information that can improve if this key still work in Windows 7. I will send feedbacks to proper department. I saw some other users encountered similar problems. For this question, you may try to create a shortcut of the dial-up and set it to run at logon. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

Thanks...I will give the short cut a try. In the meantime if you find anything out from the other department let me know. Maybe it will be one of those features that won't work in Windows 7......
