Keep hearing USB plug/unplug sound
The alert sound when plugging or unplugging a USB device keeps going off out of nowhere while the laptop is running normally. Sometimes it does it 5 times in a row, when I haven't even plugged/unplugged anything. Any solution for this?

You should probably check for new driver availability for your chipset drivers. Working drivers must be found to make this work. You should send feedback on this if that is available at your beta participation level.. The Misc. forum in this group has a 'comments' thread. You can add your experience, to help the dev team identify problem devices.Have Comments about Windows 7 RC (Do not post questions here).url: Rating posts helps other users Mark L. Ferguson MS-MVP

I'm having the same problem. Event logs don't show any notification of a device getting plugged/unplugged. I did get a notification that my Nvidia Nforce chipset needed a driver, so I downloaded that from the manufacturer's site. (I'm on an HP Pavilion tx1420us Tablet PC, running Win7 RC 64-bit, using the Vista 64-bit drivers.) Didn't help. :?

Well, that would certainly help to explain why my fingerprint sensor only seems to work some of the time. Think I'll check for an update myself... ;)

Heh. Well, it was the fingerprint driver. I downloaded the manufacturer's driver (off of HP's website for my HP tablet, Vista 64-bit version). I had to manually browse to it and select it, as Windows really wanted to use its own driver instead. But using the manufacturer's driver did make the USB plug/unplug noise stop.Unfortunately, despite the manufacturer and name being identical, and despite it showing up under "Biometric Devices" in Device Manager, Windows doesn't seem to acknowledge it as a fingerprint scanner, so fingerprint functions disappeared. When I selected the device in device manager and chose "upgrade driver", it went back to the other version. The random USB plug/unplug noise came back, and Win7 again recognizes it as a fingerprint scanner, but now Windows says there is no software installed, and I can't scan fingerprints. So I went back to the driver that didn't cause the random sounds. Even when it tried to scan, the scanner only worked half the time anyway. *shrug*

I had the same issue and it drove me crazy. What i discovered was that it was the fingerprint reader constantly being reloaded as if it were being constantly removed and reinserted. It is a driver issue I'm sure and unrelated to and hardware malfunction. Hopefully it will be addressed by release date.

I have got the same issue with my HP w2228h monitor with 2 USB ports on the side, when it goes to standby mode. I don't have anything plugged in these two ports and the plugging in/out sounds repeatedly go off when the monitor goes to sleep mode. When I power off the monitor, the USB unplug sound goes off just once, meaning that the monitor USB ports disconnect. I have the latest VISTA driver for the monitor but it doesn't seem to help. Any hints? Thanks.
