Keep having to Log onto Mapped Network Drives!
I have a Windows 7 PC, which has mapped drives from an XP Home PC.When I turn-on and log-in to my W7 PC at the start of the day, and turn on the XP Home "Server", I mostly have to enter a Username and Password to access the mapped drives. I enter my W7 username and password, as the XP machine does not have any.I have tried looking at permissions etc, but cannot see why I have to keep doing this. One side-effect of the above it seems, is that Windows Media Player on my W7 PC has a library of music that is stored on the XP machine, and my music list "doubles-up" as it re-scans the music folder and duplicates everything in the library!I assume the WMP problem is due to the drive mapping problem? But they could be completely unrelated.Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks :|

Create a user account on the XP computer with the same username and password as the account you use on the Windows 7 computer.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Thanks for reply.I did not really want to have to do this, but I thought I may aswell try. But alas, this does not work. It seems that if you boot the W7 machine up first, and it does not find the mapped drives, and then you boot up the "server" you need to authenticate yourself when accessing the mapped drives - this is big pants annoying! The server does have an account, which has no password, and I also tried to map the drives using this account, but it would not allow it at all. As it seems to have to have a matching account on the "connecting" pc?Jees.

That is normal behaviour. You could try adding a credential for the other computer. You will need an account with a password on the other computer to do this.Control Panel User Accounts Credential Manager Add a Windows CredentialResource: Enter the name of the other computerUser Name: Enter the user name in this format computer\user where computer is the name of the other computer and user is the account with a password.Password: The passwordKerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Good Morning Gentlemen,Kerry_Brown has a valid point that is a way that you can resolve this issue. The credential notification is normal when accessing information on another computer. An alternative method of bypassing the credentials notification is to create the mapped drive and specify the user logon credential when configuring the mapped drive. Be sure to configure the name of the remote computer and the remote user account information associated so therefore those specific credentials will be used only. Ensure that "Reconnect at logon" is checked. That is an alternative method for getting the job done, but the solution Kerry_Brown provided is correct as well.Thank you,Aaron GriffinMicrosoft Support

HiTo be able to auto login without to type user name and password each time do:1. Disconnect share 2. Map share again but this time check reconnect at logon and connect using different credentials check boxes and then click finish button3. Enter user name and password or just user name if no password is required, check remember my credentials check box and click OK to map shareNow share will be automatically mapped and this will not require you to type user name and password anymore

I had already tried this. But it still asks for password (not user) if I boot up the server, after my PC.I will look into Kerry Browns post...Thanks ppl :)
