KB980218 update fails
I'm having a problem installing updates, and it was preceded by problems with the SP1 update for NET framework 1.1, which seems to get paired with this problem frequently. (Spybot identified something malicious about the SP1 update and stopped it. Ever since, MS update thinks it is installed, even though it's not present on the 'add/remove' list) I tried KB980218, manually and it failed again, but at least this time I have more info which may help, perhaps, if anyone can lend a hand. Halfway through the installation, I got the following message, over the software update installation wizard box in a box that says "copy error":"setup cannot copy the file atmfd.dllEnsure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert 'Windows XP System Files' in the drive you specify.c:\windows\system32 " (with a drop down arrow next to it)I canceled the installation and did a search on C:\ and found that there are in fact several copies of that file in a number of places, one of them being C:\windows\system32. There are also 2 copies of 2 different sizes that are in C:\Windows|SoftwareDistribution\Download\<string of stuff>\sp3gdr, and in the same series, but ending sp3qfe. The second one is 280 KB, but the others are all 279 KB.It is at the point where the install process says it is backing up files, that it hiccups and stops. (But the file it says it is trying to backup is ATMFD.DLL in caps, not lower case.) If I look at the search results at this point, before cancelling the installation, I now see many more copies of the file, which will disappear once I cancel. I took a snapshot of both search results, and can be more specific if it will help. When I cancel the operation, a box offers me the option of continuing without copying the file, but I'm unsure about doing that.Anyone have any insights, here? My OS is XP media center.2 people need an answerI do too
