KB976972 USB hotfix wrecked my USB devices
All my USB devices worked fine on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit with ASUS M3N-72D motherboard with nforce 750a chipset and 8GB ram. Never had USB transfer issues prior to KB976972 USB hotfix downloaded from Windows Update as important update last night. After installed the update and restarted PC, I noticed my usb mouse cursor not moved on login screen then I used PS/2 keyboard to login Windows to entered desktop. Checked the device manager and found my usb mouse had ! icon with code 39 error and realised the hotfix wrecked it, tried uninstalled hotfix as well restore but either failed to fix, still got code 39 error. Searched internet for solutions, tried uninstalled usb mouse, usb controllers, usb hubs and reinstalled but still got code 39 error on usb mouse, printer, ipod and external hard drive. How can I fix code 39 error?

What was the Hotfix for? Hotfixes are usually obtained for a specific problem. If this is what you got http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=964205da-1ebf-465e-aa67-1af46f766ed9 then you its not a hotfix, and I wouldn't think you'd receive this update but regardless. Its sometimes one of those things I don't automatically allow to install (prefer to be notified of updates then I select what I want and ignore the rest) If the below solution doesn't work for you, you can go into safe mouse and delete the mouse rescan your hardware and let it reinstall which will let Windows Update Catalog select a suitable driver. If it isn't stable for you then for whatever reason, then install your driver for that mouse (may require compatibility mode if you can find 64bit drivers for it). good luck.Code 39 Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) CauseThere are several causes of Code 39 errors: A required device driver is missing. A required binary file is corrupted. There is a problem with the file I/O process. A driver that is referencing an entry point in another binary file is unable to load. Recommended resolutionReinstall the drivers for this device.Uninstall and reinstall the driverUninstall the driver from Device Manager, and then scan for new hardware to install the driver again. You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last time that you set up the device. However, sometimes, it will open the New Hardware Wizard which may ask for the driver. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site. On the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall. Follow the instructions. Restart your computer. Open Device Manager, click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes. Follow the instructions. I suspect that the USB controller drivers are not compatible with the hotfix. I suggest you download the latest chipset driver from ASUS website and then install in the system.00 ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- Important Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information. After installing the drivers for motherboard, I suggest you reload USB controller driver. 1. Click "Start", type in Device Manager the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary.2. In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the "Host Controller", click "Uninstall" and click "OK".3. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically. If the issue still occurs, you may need to hide that update in order to avoid the compatibility issue.Arthur Xie - MSFT
