If you ae trying to restore from an XP backup, the safest way is to use Virtual PC and then use the backup too there. I have a server so I use it heavily in combination with the Virtual PC to solve a lot of problems. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! I don't need Virtual PC. I just need to install this f....g NTBackupRestore. I copied ntbackup from XP and it is working. But why this _special_ and full compatibility update can't be installed ? Why Microsoft do it as msu package, but not .msi or .exe ? Why is nobody checked it ?

Hi, I can install the update KB974674 on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 successfully. If your operating system is x86, you also need to install the update KB974674 for x86. It cannot cross architecture. Based on the current situation, I would like to suggest you refer to the following link to download and install the correct one. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974674 Regards,Arthur Li - MSFT

Strange. The description of the download says: "Utility for restoring backups made on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 to computers that are running Windows 7 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2." (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=a71845fd-4496-439c-ab31-be73498ad3fe) I can't find anything about English/Not English/MUI versions of this decent update. There are different versions for x86 (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit), sure. But what exactly isn't working?"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers. (Thomas J. Watson, Sr.)

@Sanmartin try it on german Windows and you can't install it! When you open the cab (Windows6.1-KB974674-x86.msu\Windows6.1-KB974674-x86.cab), you will only see a minilp (.mui file) for English, no other languages. Also open the update.mum and you'll see it wants the english MUI: <parent> <assemblyIdentity name="Microsoft-Windows-WindowsFoundation-LanguagePack -Package" version="6.1.7600.16385" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="en-US " buildType="release"></assemblyIdentity> (Windows 7 Client MUI) <assemblyIdentity name="Microsoft-Windows-Server-LanguagePack -Package" version="6.1.7600.16385" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="en-US " buildType="release"></assemblyIdentity> </parent> (Windows Server 2008 R2 MUI) The only workaround is to expand the exe from the update: expand -F:* "D:\Windows6.1-KB974674-x86.cab" D:\ntbackup André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

@andre well, I really don't need this update. But for testing purposes, I've installed it anyway, no problems at all. Now, where's the issue? Ok, I'm not using a German Windows but an English one (EN-US), and yes, the language of the update seemed to be English only. And where's the problem with that? Btw, I didn't check anything about "Microsoft-Windows-WindowsFoundation-LanguagePack", I only looked at my start menu. What's there? A new entry named "NTBackup-RestoreUtility" - isn't that the wanted thing (= the update's purpose)?"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers. (Thomas J. Watson, Sr.)

The issue, is that you can't install it on a non english Windows! Try it out on a german Windows 7! You'll get a message, that the update doesn't apply to the Computer. It's too difficult to explain it, if you don't understand in detail how servicing of updates, language packs in Vista/7."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/
