KB974431 reliability update failed
Hi! I was checking my updates, and found KB974431 a reliability update had failed. So I uninstalled it. Used the "readiness tool". Both CheckSur, and CheckSur persist logs report: Checking System Update Readiness. Binary Version 6.1.7600.20751 Package Version 9.0 2010-10-21 16:26 Checking Windows Servicing Packages Checking Package Manifests and Catalogs Checking Package Watchlist Checking Component Watchlist Checking Packages Checking Component Store Summary: Seconds executed: 299 No errors detected I went back to windows update, and preformed an automatic check for updates. It found I needed KB974431, and this time it installed successfully, but I still have it listed as failed also. Would it hurt to leave it that way or should I run the "reset tool"? Hi, please run the Windows Explorer and go to the folder "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and copy the file "CBS.log" to your document folder (otherwise you can't open it) and open it with notepad. Now search for errors. Which errors do you see? If you are unsure, please upload the complete CBS.log to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here. Hi! André, thank you for your reply. After an hour of looking, here are error's that I was able to pick out. 2010-10-14 00:03:16, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start upload with file pattern: C:\Windows\servicing\sqm\*_std.sqm, flags: 0x2 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL] 2010-10-21 10:33:33, Info CBS Failed to get session package state for package: Package_2_for_KB981852~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1 [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND] 2010-10-21 10:33:33, Info CBS Failed to get session package state for package: Package_57_for_KB2158563~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0 [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND] 2010-10-21 12:35:39, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start upload with file pattern: C:\Windows\servicing\sqm\*_std.sqm, flags: 0x2 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL] 2010-10-22 09:31:10, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start upload with file pattern: C:\Windows\servicing\sqm\*_std.sqm, flags: 0x2 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL] 2010-10-23 03:25:16, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start upload with file pattern: C:\Windows\servicing\sqm\*_std.sqm, flags: 0x2 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL] The 0x80004005 Error seems to repeat quite a bit. I only found those two 0x80070490 ERROR_NOT_FOUND, but there may be more. Does ERROR_NOT_FOUND mean it isn't an error? I have chores to do now, and will try to read up on those error's, but won't do anything until I hear back from you. I have uploaded the CBS log [1], and would appreciate it if you would look at it also in case I may have missed anything . [HRESULT = 0x800f0816 - CBS_E_DPX_JOB_STATE_SAVED] Stop the update service, go to the folder C:\Windows and rename the folder SoftwareDistribution, start the Update service again and search for new updates. The log doesn't contain the data you posted. Looks you uploaded an older version."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

I do not understand what is happening. It sure looks like the one I was working with. It has dates from Last Thursday 10-14, and this Thursday, Friday, and Today. 10-21, 10-22, 10-23. But I will do what you request. First, I want to be sure of your instructions. "Stop the update service" How should I do that properly? go to > Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\Change settings , and set it to "Never check for updates"? Then go to the folder "SoftwareDistribution", and name the whole folder "SoftwareDistribution.old"? Then go back to > Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\Change settings, and change it back to "Install updates automatically", and force an update? If I understand correctly; this will create a new Softwaredistribution Folder in C:\Windows. Will it also create a new CBS file that you would like me to upload?
